OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's golf team heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend for the SEC Championship looking to secure their second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance.
The University of Alabama plays host to the 2010 SEC Championship, April 16-18, at NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The par-71, 5,963-yard course will play host to the event for the first time.
The SEC currently boasts seven teams in the Top 25, including No. 4 Auburn and No. 6 Alabama.
The Rebels will be led by freshman Haley Sanders who recently tied for second at the Rebel Intercollegiate to lead the team to a third place finish. It marked her best finish as a Rebel.
Joining Sanders in the lineup will be sophomores Haley Millsap and Ashley Lance, senior Sara Grantham and sophomore Natalie Gleadall.
"We had a great week of preparation. Our last round at the Rebel Intercollegiate (even par 288) has carried over and provided the team with a lot of energy, and as a result they worked really hard this last week," head coach Michele Drinkard said.
"It is fun to watch a group of young ladies that are determined to keep improving each session. Their work ethic and passion that they have is very contagious. You can see the excitement they have and how much they enjoy competing."
Drinkard is familiar with NorthRiver, as she was a junior member there upon graduation from the University of Alabama.
"NorthRiver is a challenging but fair layout and is always in great condition. There are a few holes out there where your strategy just has to be what the design gives you and that's it. We can't wait for the challenge to get out there and compete," she said.
Ole Miss earned its best finish since 1999 at the 2009 SEC Championship, carding a final round 291 to take seventh at the Cobblestone Park Golf Club in Columbia, S.C.
The Rebels will tee off the first round Friday. Fans can follow all the action throughout the tournament by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the live scoring link in the Rebel Hub.
