Rebels Take Double Header From Samford

4/16/2010 | Softball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Shortstop Lauren Grill went 3-for-4 at the plate with a homer and four walks and Brittany Barnhill and Lindsey Perry both pick up complete-game victories as Ole Miss (23-18) earned a double header sweep over Samford on Thursday. The Rebels took the first game 7-3 and completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory in game two.

Grill started the Rebel scoring in the top of the first with a two-run homer to left center that scored Alise Doubt, who singled with one down in the frame. Back-to-back-to-back singles from Brittany Barnhill, Amber Tramp and Alyssa McGovern loaded the bases for third baseman Cali Overbeck, who poked a single over the shortstop's head to plate Barnhill for a 3-0 advantage after one-half inning.

Grill finished game one 1-for-2 at the plate with a homer and two walks. She also picked up two RBI and a run scored. The two runs knocked in places Grill just three RBI behind DeDe Justice's career record of 133.

Overbeck extended the Ole Miss lead in the fifth with a two-run home run to left center. The blast scored McGovern, who had reached on an arrant throw, and was Overbeck's team-leading sixth homer of the season. After Aly Presswood singled up the middle, left fielder Ashley Dowdy crushed her first home run of the season straight down the left field line to put the Rebels up 7-0.

Samford picked up two runs in the sixth on an RBI groundout and a bases-loaded walk. The Bulldogs added their third run in the seventh on another RBI groundout.

Barnhill earned the complete-game win after allowing two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out seven and issued three walks. She also finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Tuscaloosa to face the No. 5 nationally-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide for a three-game series. The Rebels and the Tide will play a double header on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. and conclude the set on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Game Two

Shortstop Lauren Grill finished game two 2-for-2 at the plate with two singles and two walks and pitcher Lindsey Perry allowed one run in a complete-game effort as Ole Miss knocked off Samford 3-1 in game two of a double header on Thursday.

The Rebels grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after Alyssa McGovern walked and later scored on a wild pitch and center fielder Ashley Dowdy hit a RBI ground out to plate Aly Presswood, who had reached on a fielding error by Bulldog shortstop Amanda Jordan.

Ole Miss added to its lead in the third after Brittany Broome scored from third on a wild throw by Samford third baseman Katie England on a Brittany Barnhill grounder. Grill had walked to led off the frame and was pinch ran for by Broome, who stole second and advanced to third on an arrant throw by the catcher on the stolen base.

Samford pulled to within 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI double down the left field line by right fielder Aaren Fisher.

Perry (7-3) allowed only one run on four hits in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out nine and walked three for her fifth complete game of the season.
