Ole Miss Falls To No. 5 Alabama In Double Header

4/17/2010 | Softball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Ole Miss Rebels dropped both games of a double header to No. 5 Alabama on Saturday at the Alabama Softball Complex. The Rebels fell 14-0 in game one and lost 8-3 to the Crimson Tide in the second game of the day.

Alabama took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game one on a pair of RBI singles from Charlotte Morgan and Alex Blewitt. The Crimson Tide were aided by four walks, two wild pitches and a hit batter from Ole Miss pitchers in the frame.

The Tide added another run in the second after relief pitcher Brittany Barnhill issued a bases-loaded walk with two down in the inning. However, Barnhill got center fielder Jennifer Fenton to line out to center to leave the bases loaded.

Morgan extended the Alabama lead to 7-0 in the third with a sac fly in foul territory to left. The Tide added four more runs in the third highlighted by a two-run single to right center by catcher Kendall Dawson that gave Alabama an 11-0 lead after three.

Ole Miss threatened in the fourth after Alise Doubt singled to lead off the frame and Lauren Grill walked to give the Rebels runners on first and second with no outs, but Crimson Tide starting pitcher Kelsi Dunne retired the next three batters in a row to strand both runners.

Morgan hit a three-run homer to left in the bottom of the fourth to give Alabama its final three runs of the game.

Becky Nye (6-10) started for the Rebels and took the loss. She allowed 11 runs, all earned, in 2.1 inning of action. Barnhill entered in relief of Nye in the first and pitched 1.2 innings. She allowed three runs on three hits. Nye relieved Barnhill in the third and pitched the final 2.0 innings.

The Rebels and the Tide will finish up their three-game set tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at the Alabama Softball Complex.

Game Two

Shortstop Lauren Grill hit her sixth home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as Alabama took game two 8-3 over Ole Miss.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Grill's solo home run to left center. It was her sixth homer of the season and tied her with Cali Overbeck for the team lead. The solo shot gave her the 131st RBI of her career and put Grill just two behind DeDe Justice's school record of 133.

Alabama tied the game at one in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to center by right fielder Cassie Reilly-Boccia. Catcher Jennifer Fenton gave the Tide the lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out, RBI double to left. Left fielder Jazlyn Lunceford added an RBI single two batters later and Reilly-Boocia earned a bases-loaded walk that gave Alabama a 4-1 advantage after two.

The Tide added two more runs in the third highlighted by an RBI single to center by Fenton that gave Alabama a 6-1 lead.

Ole Miss clawed back in the fourth with an RBI single from third baseman Cali Overbeck and an RBI groundout by first baseman Aly Presswood that brought the Rebels to within 6-3.

Alabama plated two more runs in the fifth on another RBI single from Fenton and a bases-loaded illegal pitch called on relief pitcher Brittany Barnhill.

Lindsey Perry (7-4) started for Ole Miss and gave up six runs, five earned, in 2.1 innings for the loss. Barnhill entered in relief in the third and pitched the final 3.2 innings, striking out five and allowing two runs.
