Ole Miss Celebrates National Student-Athlete Day

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss recently joined hundreds of schools across the nation in celebrating the 23rd-annual National Student-Athlete Day.

Ole Miss' community service project kicked off the April 7 festivities, which recognize student-athletes for their academic success and community service involvement. Rebel student-athletes welcomed approximately 220 fourth-graders from Oxford's Della Davidson Elementary School for a day of activities on the Ole Miss campus.

Later that evening, over 120 Rebel student-athletes, athletics department staff and guests filed into the Inn at Ole Miss for the NSAD reception and awards ceremony, which was hosted by the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The Superior Student-Athlete Award recognizes underclassmen from each sport for their contributions to their team, the University and their community, and the recipients included: Jillian Brodd, Women's Golf; Taylor Cunningham, Soccer; Amanda Hutcheson, Softball; Joel Kight, Football; Emily Kvitle, Volleyball; Kayla Melson, Women's Basketball; Lee Ellis Moore, Men's Track; Jonathan Randolph, Men's Golf; Sofie Persson, Women's Track; Keely Stankey, Rifle; Connor Vogel, Women's Tennis; Tucker Vorster, Men's Tennis; Chris Warren, Men's Basketball and Alex Yarbrough, Baseball.

In addition, the Rebel and Lady Rebel of the Year awards were presented to Track's Barnabas Kirui and Basketball's Bianca Thomas, respectively.

National Student-Athlete Day is America's day to celebrate outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to the community. The day was established by the National Consortium for Academics & Sports and Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society and is co-sponsored by the NCAA.
