Nye Pitches Rebels Past Southern Miss

4/7/2010 | Softball

RIDGELAND, Miss. - Senior Becky Nye pitched a complete-game shutout and Ole Miss exploded for four two-out runs in the top of the seventh to break a scoreless tie and lead the Rebels to a 4-0 victory over in-state foe Southern Miss on Tuesday night at Freedom Ridge Park.

With two down and nobody on in the Ole Miss (21-15) seventh, first baseman Aly Presswood started the Rebel rally with a single down the right field line before she was pinch ran for by Brittany Broome. Courtnie Ghinaudo then singled through the right side of the infield and went to second on the throw to third giving Ole Miss runners on second and third. Lead-off batter Corrine Doornberg was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Rebels before Alise Doubt hit a short single to third, which was thrown away by Britney Dinelt allowing Broome and Ghinaudo to score and give the Rebels the 2-0 lead. After shortstop Lauren Grill walked, designated player Brittany Barnhill laced a two-run single to right to plate two more runs for the final score.

"Becky pitched very well today and the girls never gave up," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "They fought hard all game and found a way to get the job done."

Nye (6-7) gave up only two hits and struck out four in 7.0 innings for her 11th career shutout. She issued three walks and only allowed one runner past second base.

The game featured excellent pitching as Nye and Southern Miss starting pitcher Courtney Ramos did not allow a run through six innings of work.

Third baseman Cali Overbeck led off the Ole Miss half of the third with an infield single moved to second on an Aly Presswood ground out. However, Ghinaudo struck out and second baseman Corrine Doornberg grounded out to third to end the Rebel threat.

USM third baseman Britney Dinelt doubled down the left field line with one down in the bottom of the third, but Nye retired the next two batters on a pop out and a ground out to strand Dinelt at third.

Rebel right fielder Alyssa McGovern reached on an infield single to start the fifth and moved to second on a sac bunt by Overbeck. Presswood struck out swinging for the second out, but McGovern moved to third on a passed ball. However, Ramos got Ghinaudo to ground out to short to end the frame.

In the top of the sixth, Doornberg led off the frame with a single through the left side of the infield and moved to third on a sac bunt by Doubt and a Lauren Grill ground out. With two down in the inning, designated player Brittany Barnhill drew a four-pitch walk to give the Rebels runners on the corners, but catcher Amber Tramp flew out to right center to strand both runners.

Ole Miss will return to Oxford this weekend for an SEC Series against the 12th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels and the Dogs will play a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans will be treated to free chicken tenders from Bofield's during Saturday's first game.
