Kirui, Robertson Crowned SEC Outdoor Champions

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Ole Miss newcomers Martin Kirui and Ricky Robertson were both crowned SEC outdoor champions in their respective events over the weekend at the SEC Championships from Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
Martin Kirui was crowned the SEC champion in the 3000 meter steeplechase after turning in a time of 8:50.08. He also placed seventh in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:14.23.
Robertson won the high jump with a height of 7-02.50 to become the first Rebel in school history to win the event at the outdoor championships. In addition, it was his second SEC win of the year as he was also the SEC indoor champion in the high jump with a school record height of 7-04.25 last February.
Martin Kirui and Robertson helped the Rebels finish with a total of 74 points and a sixth place finish to mark the highest team finish for the men's team since the 1993 team finished in a tie for sixth.
Senior Barnabas Kirui scored in three different events and finished the weekend with a total of 22 points to mark the highest point total of any individual that competed in the championships.
Barnabas Kirui finished in second place in the 3000 meter steeplechase and picked up eight points after posting a time of 8:51.13 before taking third in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:40.13 to pick up six points. In his final event, he turned in a second place finish in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:06.88.
Sophomore Caleb Lee placed seventh in the long jump after turning in a distance of 24-10.00 to collect two points. Fellow sophomore Brian Knight earned six points by placing third in the high jump with a height of 7-00.25.
Senior Colin Moleton tallied six points for the Rebels after placing third in the javelin throw with a distance of 217-04.00. Bryce Willen took sixth place and picked up three points in the event by finishing sixth with a distance of 213-09.00.
Karl Kosman took sixth place in the pole vault with a height of 15-11.00 to collect three points.
Freshman sprinter Mike Granger earned a fifth place finish in the 100 meters with the fourth-fastest time in school history with a mark of 10.29. Sophomore Carson Blanks posted a third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.24 after finishing fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 52.33.
On the women's side, junior LaJada Baldwin scored five points and finished in fourth place in the 400 meters with a time of 52.89. Her finish helped the women's team take ninth place with a total of 48 points.
Sofie Persson placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.07, while senior Jasmine Dacus finished in sixth place with a time of 1:00.17. Dacus' time of 59.36 in the preliminaries was the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Distance runner Logan Waites recorded the second-fastest time in school history in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:58.03 en route to a ninth place finish.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Lor'Rena De'Jurnett, Kristin Bridges, Jasmine Williams and Baldwin finished in fifth place with a time of 45.27. The 4x400 meter relay team of Sofia Hellberg-Jonsen, Bridges, Baldwin and Persson took sixth place with a time of 3:37.08.
In field events, freshman Jazmin Miller finished in ninth place in the hammer throw and turned in the fifth-longest mark in history with a distance of 168-06.00.
Freshman Brittany Bozeman turned in a third place finish in the long jump and recorded the fourth-longest mark in school history with a distance of 20-05.25. Junior Rachel Jenkins picked up two points and took seventh with a mark of 19-11.50.
Bozeman also posted a seventh place finish in the heptathlon and tallied two points after collecting a total of 5,070 points, which also marked the third-most points in school history. She recorded a distance of 20-10.50 in the long jump of the heptathlon to mark a new SEC record in the event within the heptathlon.
Sophomore Aria Gaines placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 40-09.50 and picked up three points.
Davina Orieukwu collected the second-furthest distance in school history in the discus throw with a mark of 161-02.00 en route to a fourth place finish. She also finished in fifth place in the shot put with a distance of 50-06.25, while Betty Williams took seventh place with a mark of 48-09.00.
Freshman Neal Tisher finished in seventh place in the pole vault after collecting the second-highest mark in school history with a height of 12-08.75. Tisher went on to take eighth place in the javelin throw with a distance of 129-09.00.
Ole Miss returns to action May 27-29 when the Rebels travel to Greensboro, N.C., to take part in the NCAA Preliminary Round-East.
