OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss junior pitcher Drew Pomeranz has been named one of the 25 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced on Thursday. Given to the nation's top collegiate baseball player, the Dick Howser Trophy is presented by the NCBWA in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the College Baseball Foundation.
This season, Pomeranz has been a top performer for the Rebels and on a national level. The southpaw has posted a 7-1 record on the year and leads the Southeastern Conference in strikeouts (121), ERA (2.15) and opposing batting average (.176). The junior was named the Midseason Player and Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America and has been a consistent mention as one of the projected top picks in the upcoming MLB Draft.
His 121 strikeouts is fifth on the single-season strikeout list at Ole Miss and puts the left-hander at 326 strikeouts for his career - seven shy of setting a new career mark of 333 strikeouts. Lance Lynn is the current career strikeout leader with 332 in his career from 2006-2008.
The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on two rounds of national voting. Three 2010 finalists will be announced just prior to the first game of the College World Series with a press conference slated for Saturday, June 10, at 10 a.m. (CDT) at Rosenblatt Stadium. The winner will be named in a national broadcast from Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, July 2.
