Men's Golf Improves On Day Two At NCAA Regional
5/21/2010 | Men's Golf
ATLANTA - The Ole Miss men's golf team rebounded from Thursday's disappointing opening round of the NCAA Southeast Regional to shoot 285 in the second round here Friday at the Capital City Club - Crabapple.
Most all of the Rebels improved their scores on day two, led by sophomore Joe David's 1-under 69. He moved up to a tie for 25th.
Just before play was suspended due to lightening, junior Jonathan Randolph finished off a 72 and sits at even par for the tournament, tied for fifth in the individual standings.
Pete Kellermann shot 71 and Billy Brozovich turned in a 73 to finish out the Rebel scoring.
With a team total of 586, the Rebels are tied for 10th, 10 shots back of the top five, which is where they need to be at the end of the day Saturday to advance to the NCAA Finals.
"We played much better today. The course was wet and the greens were a little slower. We made up some ground. We still have a long way to go, but it's doable," head coach Ernest Ross said. "We are really proud of Joe for shooting 69 today. Jonathan Randolph hung in there even though he didn't have his "A" game. As a whole, everybody played better. We just need a great effort tomorrow."
Clemson posted a 2-under 278 in the second round for a two-day total of 561 and leads Oklahoma State (564) by three. Host Georgia Tech (573) is third followed by BYU (576) and South Alabama (576) tied for fourth.
Randolph is just three back of individual leader Robbie Fillmore (BYU) for the lead. There are 10 players within three shots of Fillmore and. Randolph has five top-five finishes in six starts this spring.
The Southeast Regional is one of six NCAA regionals that began Thursday. The top five teams from each regional, plus the top individual not on one of those teams, advance to the NCAA Championships June 1-6 at The Honors Course outside Chattanooga, Tenn.
The 54-hole Southeast Regional concludes with the final 18 holes on Saturday. Friday's round was delayed 1:20 minutes prior to the start and a two-hour delay took place from 3:04 p.m. to 5:04 p.m.
The Rebels tee off the final round at 7:20 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the Rebel Hub.
