Randolph Tied For Lead At NCAA Regional
5/21/2010 | Men's Golf
ATLANTA - Ole Miss junior golfer Jonathan Randolph shot a 2-under 68 here Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional and is tied for the lead at the Capital City Club - Crabapple.
Unfortunately, Randolph didn't have much help, as the rest of the team struggled. The Rebels shot a 301 and are in 12th place in the 13-team field.
"We had some players that got off to bad starts and got discouraged. This is a tough course, and a few tough pins brought out some bad plays by us," head coach Ernest Ross said. "Experience is a hard teacher, and it really hurts when you get to this stage. We have to work on controlling our self-talk and be more positive. I will be surprised if we don't play a lot better tomorrow."
Randolph carded five birdies including on the 18th to finish 2-under. He's tied for the lead with Georgia Tech's John Tyler Griffin, Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein and Kansas State's Mitchell Gregson.
Sophomore Joe David posted a 75 and freshmen Pete Kellermann and Tom Brown both shot 79 to round out the Rebel scoring.
Oklahoma State, the No. 1 seed in the regional, shot a 2-over par 282 on the par 70, 7,182-yard layout about 20 miles outside of Atlanta. Clemson (283) is one shot back, followed by regional host and ACC Champion Georgia Tech (287), Georgia Southern (288) and BYU (289).
It's a logjam at the top of the individual leader board with nine players all within one shot of the lead and 12 within two shots.
The Rebels may be in 12th, but coming from the back of the pack is nothing new. In the SEC Championship they were in 10th after day one, and rallied to finish second.
The 54-hole Southeast Regional continues with 18 holes Friday and the final 18 holes on Saturday. Competition will begin earlier than scheduled Friday, at 7:30 a.m. The Rebels are in the group that tees of beginning at 6:50 a.m. CT.
