Randolph Just Misses Out On Individual Spot At NCAAs
5/22/2010 | Men's Golf
ATLANTA - Ole Miss men's golfer Jonathan Randolph just missed out on earning the individual spot to the NCAA Finals at the NCAA Southeast Regional here Saturday at the Capital City Golf Club - Crabapple, falling on the fifth playoff hole.
Randolph and BYU's Robbie Fillmore were tied for third at the end of the final round with a 209, after each shot 69. They began what would be a tight, grueling playoff on the 18th. Each made par on the first playoff hole and then went back to the 18 again. The playoff lasted five holes and finally concluded on the fifth one (No. 10) when Fillmore chipped in for birdie from off the green. Randolph's putt for birdie, also from off the green, just missed.
Randolph got into a playoff, by posting five birdies on the back nine including one on the ninth hole (his 18th). Knowing what he needed on the final hole to force a playoff, Randolph hit his second shot from about 170 to within five feet and made the putt to get into the playoff.
"It was a great tournament for Jonathan," head coach Ernest Ross said. "His last nine holes of 5-under 30 on this golf course was probably some of the best golf I've ever seen. I am sorry he had to lose in a playoff. He played great until the other guy chipped in for birdie. I know he'll come back stronger. This will only fuel his desire."
"I can't really complain. I had my chances all week. I made a lot of "stupid" bogeys as I would call them, a lot of three putts. The way I started my round it wasn't good enough. I made a good run at the end. Shooting 30 on the back nine, I knew I could do it. I just needed to go execute and do what I could. Everything was going my way. Honestly, in the playoff I hit one bad shot, but it didn't even cost me. It's a lot better to get beat by somebody then to lose. It's tough," Randolph said.
Still it was a great tournament for the junior from Brandon, Miss., who finished the spring with six top-five showings in seven starts.
The team shot 287 in the final round to finish 10th at 873. A disappointing 301 in the first round hurt their chances, as they shot 285 in the second round.
"Team had a disappointing week. I know they're not very satisfied, I'm not either. We have everybody coming back next year. We've got to make a resolve to improve as players over the summer."
Randolph talked about the year as a whole and said he is excited about the future.
"It was good a year. My game has been maturing. The coaches have been working really hard to make us better. If it wasn't for one really bad round here we would be going to Chattanooga. I am looking forward to next year. We've got a couple of new guys coming in that will contribute," he said.
