5/26/2010 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss track and field head coach Joe Walker announced Wednesday that middle distance runner Tia Leake has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the Rebels next season.

A native of Long Beach, Calif., Leake was a four-year letterwinner in both track and field and cross country under head coach Keith Anderson at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, which is considered as one of the top track and field high schools in the nation.

She helped lead the Jackrabbits to three California State Championships and was tabbed Most Valuable Runner in all four years.

Leake owns a personal best time of 2:12 in the 800 meters she posted during her freshman year and was the only underclassman to advance to the California Interscholastic Federation Meet on her way to a fourth-place finish. In addition, Leake was a California Division I finalist in the 800 meters in each of her four years with the Jackrabbits.

She also boasts top times of 3:43 in the 1200 meters, 5:19 in the 1600 meters, 18:20 in the three-mile run and 56.3 in the 4x400 meter relay split.

"We are really excited to have Tia joining our team," Walker said. "She is a great middle distance runner who will make an immediate impact in our program. Her high school is one of the best in the country, and she knows what it takes to win."
