Women's Golf Opens Play At NCAA Central Regional

5/6/2010 | Women's Golf

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Ole Miss women's golf team was among many teams to find the going tough at Otter Creek Golf Course here Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional, but the Rebels still managed to put themselves in solid position (T8th) heading into the second round.

The Rebels shot a 309 to put them in a tie for eighth, just three strokes out of the top five. Top-seeded and second-ranked Arizona State was one of only two teams to shoot lower than 300, carding a 297 to lead fifth-ranked Southern California (299 by two. Purdue, Oregon and Oklahoma State round out the top five.

Junior Jillian Brodd shot 75 to lead Ole Miss and is tied for 16th. Sophomore Haley Millsap carded a 77, senior Sara Grantham finished with a 78, and Natalie Gleadall rounded out the scoring with a 79.

"We have put ourselves in good position for our second round. Tomorrow we need to do a better of job staying in the process, and we know that too," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "We let a few things distract us today on our closing holes, but in the long run knowing how to handle those distractions will make us stronger. We are definitely up for the challenge.

It's nice to have Jillian back in the lineup. She has a relaxed presence about her that rubs off on all of us. She played very solid today and did a great job with her process and taking what the golf course was giving her."

The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Finals May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C.

The Rebels will tee off the second round beginning at 12:30 p.m. You can follow all the action at www.OleMissSports.com by clicking on the live scoring link in the Rebel Hub.
