Ole Miss Athletics Posts Strong APR Results

6/9/2010 | Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. -- Sixteen University of Mississippi varsity athletics teams scored above the national cutoff standard of 925 in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) the NCAA announced Wednesday. Figures released covered the four-year period extending from the 2005-06 through 2008-09 school years.

The football (921) and men's basketball (922) teams were Ole Miss' only sports that fell below the 925 mark for the four-year period. However, both teams made strong improvements in their single-year scores in 2008-09 with the back-to-back Cotton Bowl Champion football team earning a 957 and the defending SEC West Champion men's basketball team posting a 980.

Neither team will incur penalties because no student-athletes on those teams left Ole Miss prior to the expiration of their eligibility with insufficient academic standing.

Both the Ole Miss women's golf and volleyball teams scored a perfect 1000 to lead all Rebel teams. Earlier this spring, both teams received public recognition awards from the NCAA for posting multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of their particular sport. Ole Miss was among only 62 Division I women's golf teams and four SEC squads to earn the distinction. This marks the second year in a row for Rebel women's golf to be honored. The volleyball team was among 55 Division I teams and only two SEC squads to receive the distinction.

The women's golf (1000), volleyball (1000), soccer (979), softball (985), women's tennis (964), women's basketball (986) and indoor and outdoor track (981/989) teams all posted multi-year APR scores above the national average for Division I.

"It was another banner academic year for Ole Miss Athletics," said Athletics Director Pete Boone. "Enough credit cannot be given to our academic support staff, headed by Karen Schiferl. They work long, hard hours at odd times and make a significant difference in the academic success of many of our young men and women."

For the 2008-09 academic year, nine teams posted a perfect 1000 APR. In addition to women's golf and volleyball, the baseball, women's basketball, women's cross country, softball, women's tennis and women's indoor and outdoor track teams also reached the 1000 mark for their single-year score.

Now in its sixth year, the Academic Progress Rate measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. It also serves as a predictor of graduation success. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09 academic years. The NCAA's Division I Board of Directors set cut scores of 925 and 900 (out of 1000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible immediate and historical sanctions. An APR of 925 translates to approximately a 50 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and an APR of 900 translates to approximately a 40 percent GSR.

This is the fifth year of immediate (or contemporaneous) penalties for teams that score below 925 APR, and have a student-athlete who leaves school academically ineligible. This year marks the fourth year for historical penalties. Second-year sanctions include restrictions on scholarships and practice time. Teams that receive three straight years of historical penalties (below 900 APR) face the potential of restrictions on postseason competition for the team, in addition to scholarship and practice restrictions.
