OXFORD, Miss. - Since opening in January, the Basketball Practice Facility has been a welcome addition to the Ole Miss athletics complex on campus.
Over the course of the spring, the BPF received its final aesthetic touches that make it one of the top college hoops facilities in the country.
The 51,000-square-foot construction is the everyday home of the Rebel men's and women's hoops programs. It contains practice courts, locker rooms, players' lounges, coaches' offices and meeting rooms for both programs, as well as a shared training room, weight room and media/multi-purpose area.
In addition to the current student-athletes and sports camps that utilize the facility, several former Rebels return to Oxford to train during their professional league's offseason.
Bam Doyne, a starting guard on the 2007 SEC West Champion squad, trains in the BPF during the summer when he is back from playing professionally in Hungary.
"I love it," said Doyne, who was the Hungarian league's second-leading scorer this past season. "It has everything, and it is all very nice, high quality. It's great all the way around, from the courts to the training room. It's just as good as the football facility, though obviously doesn't have to be as big. Everything is brand new, nice and state of the art."
Doyne also believes the facility is an advantage for the entire Ole Miss hoops program.
"It's big to have a facility like this. A lot of schools have it, and it's definitely an advantage. Kids want to go somewhere with facilities like this. What do we have to show them? Now we have this BPF and it makes a big difference in recruiting. It's a great step for the program. And it's not only good for basketball, but it's good for the university as a whole to have top-notch facilities to show off."
