OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football team kicked off the first gameweek of the season by announcing its 2010 team captains Sunday night in a team meeting at the Overby Center on campus.
The captains, which were voted on by the players last weekend, include WR Lionel Breaux (New Orleans, La.), S Johnny Brown (Charleston, Miss.), LB Jonathan Cornell (Azusa, Calif.), DE Kentrell Lockett (Hahnville, La.) and DT Jerrell Powe (Waynesboro, Miss.).
"They're the heart and soul of the team, they're our backbone," said Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt. "They've led our team since January. They led in every way, as far as weight room, classroom, lockerroom and then on the field."
Prior to the team meeting, the Rebels held a short walk-thru in helmets and shorts in the Indoor Practice Facility. Nutt said the players are excited to shift from practice to game mode.
"They're tired of hitting each other and ready to hit someone else," he said. "We've had a good camp, but now it's gameweek and we're looking forward to it."
Nutt will hold his first weekly press conference on Monday, and fans can watch the event live at 3 p.m. CT through OleMissSports.com's RebelVision. The press conference will return to its usual 2 p.m. time slot next week.
On Thursday, Nutt and the Rebel football team will join the marching band, spirit groups and special guests for a pep rally, which begins at 6 p.m. in the south endzone of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and the public should enter through Gates 1-4 and Gate 31. Fan seating for the pep rally will be in sections S3 through S9.
Saturday's season opener against Jacksonville State is set for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff. A limited number of tickets remains, and fans are encouraged to act now by visiting the OleMissSports.com ticket site or calling 662-915-7167 or 1-888-732-8587 (in state).
