Women's Tennis Wins Titles At Duke And Memphis

CARY, N.C. - Ole Miss junior All-American Kristi Boxx captured the Flight C Singles title at the Duke Fab Four Invite Sunday at Cary Tennis Park, while freshman Vivian Vlaar won the Flight A2 title at the Memphis Invitational.

Boxx, ranked No. 20 in the nation, came back to defeat Duke senior Ellah Nze, ranked No. 29, in three sets to win her bracket. After dropping the first set 6-3, Boxx won the final two 6-2, 6-3. The Grenada, Miss., native improved to 5-2 on the year.

On Saturday, Boxx beat Duke's Rachel Kahan in straight sets and then followed up with a straight-set semifinal win against Northwestern's Belinda Niu.

Boxx took home two titles this weekend, also claiming the Flight B Doubles title with fellow junior Abby Guthrie. The 15th-ranked pair downed Alabama's Mary Anne Macfarlane and Antonio Foehese 8-4 in the final.

The Duke Fab Four Invite featured a strong field, which also included Alabama, Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.

In Memphis, Vlaar downed Ewa Szatkowska (Tulsa) 6-1, 6-3 to win her draw. Vlaar lost only nine games total in three matches to improve to 5-1 on the year.

The Rebels will be back on the courts Oct. 2-10 at the Riviera All-American Championships.
