Volleyball Rebels Give Back To Community On Road Trip

OXFORD, Miss. - While the primary purpose of the Rebel's trip to Houston this past weekend was to compete in the volleyball tournament hosted by Rice University, it wasn't the only thing the squad did with its time.

After claiming the Rice Invitational title on Saturday night, the Ole Miss volleyball team took some time Sunday morning to give a little back to the city of Houston. That morning the volleyball team went to a local homeless shelter to do some community service.

"It was a great experience for the team that helps us all realize how fortunate we are," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "It shows the athletes what we can do to help others who aren't as fortunate and showed that we have a role to play in giving back to the community and we can do that on a regular basis."

The team went to The Beacon, a part of the John S. Dunn Outreach Center, in downtown Houston. Over the course of their two hour stay at the center, the Rebels got to interact with the clients of the shelter and learn about them while meeting their families and sharing their backgrounds.

The athletic squad also spent part of the morning working with meal preparation by cutting up potatoes and working to prepare a beef stew, washing dishes and also helped do over 300 pounds of laundry, including the folding.

This shelter provides a meal including unlimited beverages, laundry service, shower facilities (each person gets 15 minutes), Case management services including social services, housing assistance, life skills training, outreach services such as pastoral care and a shelter to use from 9-4PM.
