COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Craven put down 15 kills and hit .433 to help lead Ole Miss (9-3, 3-0 SEC) past South Carolina (2-10, 0-3 SEC) by a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-18).
With the win, the Rebels have now claimed seven consecutive wins dating back to a win over Morehead State to close out the Northwestern Challenge on Sept. 5.
Allegra Wells added eight kills on the night and hit .357, while Amanda Philpot set the offense with 34 assists. Emily Kvitle led the Rebel defense with 14 digs, while Morgan Springer added 12 digs in the winning effort.
"It was a great road win for us. I thought the team really came together, which was good after a little adversity this week. It was Whitney's best match of the year. It was a very solid performance. The best part of playing in the SEC is now we get to turn around and play third-ranked Florida. That's why these kids are here is to play with the best."
Ole Miss and South Carolina traded scores out of the gates with the Rebels snapping an 8-8 tie on a kill from Craven. Ole Miss pulled away from there, moving out to as much as a five point lead before claiming the first set 25-21. The Rebels did most of it behind the play of Craven, who hit .538 in the first set and put down seven kills on 13 swings with no errors.
The second set opened the same as the first, with the two teams locked in a nip-and-tuck struggle. This time it was on the backs of the middles as Miranda Kitts and Regina Thomas combined for 7 kills and a pair of blocks in the set. Ole Miss pulled ahead at 10-7 and held the lead from there, closing out the second frame 25-17 to take a two set advantage heading into the break.
The third set saw the Rebels jump out to a 4-1 lead before South Carolina fought back to tie things at seven. Ole Miss again put together a run, moving back out in front 10-7 and held on to the lead from there. The Rebels closed out the set on a 15-8 run to claim the match with a 25-18 win in the third set.
Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday when the Rebels take on No. 3 Florida at 12:30 p.m. CT. Fans can follow all the action with GameTracker at www.OleMissSports.com.
