CLEARWATER, Fla. - Brittany Barnhill pitched 6.2 scoreless innings and smashed an RBI single to help lead Ole Miss to a 5-3 win over Fordham on day one at the USF-Fairfield Inn & Suites Tournament on Friday. Barnhill allowed just two runs in the second game, but No. 25 DePaul used an extra-inning run to defeat the Rebels 3-2 in eight innings.

In the first game of the day, Barnhill, who entered in relief of starting pitcher Kendall Bruning in the first inning, struck out four and allowed only three hits in six-plus innings of work.

Fordham took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by second baseman Beckah Wiggins and a two-run single by designated player Gabby Luety.

Ole Miss responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Barnhill that scored second baseman Corrine Doornberg, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. Shortstop Marina Parra added an RBI groundout later in the inning that pulled the Rebels to within 3-2 after one.

The Rebels took a lead in fourth after leftfielder Brittany Broome reached on an infield single with one down in the bottom of the frame and moved to third on Erinn Jayjohn's double into the left field corner. Doornberg then lifted a fly ball into center that scored Broome to tie the game at three. Center fielder RT Cantillo laced a double into left that plated Jayjohn and gave Ole Miss its first lead. Cantillo added to the lead after she advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a passed ball to put the Rebels up 5-3 after four.

"We played with a great mindset today," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson "I think our play carried over from the end of last weekend and that showed on the field. The players displayed an inner fight to overcome a rough first inning against Fordham. Brittany Barnhill stepped up with a great pitching performance and carried that into the second game against DePaul. The four freshmen (RT Cantillo, Erinn Jayjohn, Londen Ladner and Marina Parra) continue to show their maturity and Kendall Bruning was able rebound against DePaul with an RBI and a good performance in the circle. We need to carry our no fear mentality throughout the rest of the weekend."

Broome finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Cali Overbeck added two hits in two at-bats and scored one run.

Game Two

Barnhill pitched 5.2 innings and allowed just two runs on three hits with two strikeouts, but DePaul catcher Marla Mathews' RBI single in the top of the eighth inning broke a two-all tie and lifted the No. 25 Blue Demons to a 3-2 win over the Rebels in the day's second game.

Ole Miss grabbed a 1-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI infield single from freshman RT Cantillo.

DePaul took the lead in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-run triple to left by centerfielder Alex Morocco that just went over the head of left fielder Brittany Broome, who took a misstep in when the ball was hit. The two-run hit snapped Barnhill's 11.1-inning scoreless streak on the day.

Cantillo led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to left center and moved to third on an Overbeck groundout. She scored on a Kendall Bruning sac fly to tie the game at two after six. Cantillo led Ole Miss at the plate with two hits and an RBI.

Bruning entered in relief of Barnhill in the sixth and took the loss after allowing one unearned run on just one hit, while striking out four.

Ole Miss will continue play at the USF-Fairfield Inn & Suites Tournament tomorrow when the Rebels faced off against UAB at 11:30 a.m. and host USF at 4 p.m.
