Freshmen Outburst Not Enough As Rebels Fall To Gamecocks

3/11/2011 | Softball

March 11, 2011

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Freshmen Londen Ladner and Natalie Nimmo combined to knock in six of Ole Miss' seven runs, but it wasn't enough as the Rebels fell 10-7 to South Carolina to open SEC play on Friday.

Ladner picked up three hits and three RBI in four at-bats, including a home run and double, while Nimmo added a three-run home run to lead the Rebels at the plate.

With the Rebels trailing 4-1 entering the top of the sixth, Ladner's two-run double to left center brought Ole Miss (9-16, 0-1 SEC) to within a one of the Gamecocks (14-7, 1-2 SEC) before Cali Overbeck's RBI single up the middle tied the game at four. Nimmo then deposited Gamecock starter Audrey Broyles' first pitch over the wall in left for a three-run shot that gave the Rebels a 7-4 lead.

The Gamecocks answered back in the bottom of the frame with six runs of their own, highlighted by a two-run single by Dana Hathorn that gave South Carolina its winning margin.

South Carolina took an early lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out, two-run triple to left by centerfielder Lauren Lackey, who later scored on a passed ball to give the Gamecocks a 3-0 advantage after two innings.

Ladner cut into the Gamecock lead in the fourth with a solo blast to deep left center that gave the Rebels their first run of the game. South Carolina extended its lead to 4-1 in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle from shortstop Samie Garcia.

Lindsey Perry started for the Rebels and allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits in 4.1 innings. Kendall Bruning entered in relief of Perry in the fifth and took the loss. She allowed four runs, all earned, in 1.2 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Brittany Barnhill also pitched a third of an inning and gave up two runs on three hits.

The Rebels and the Gamecocks will continue their three-game series tomorrow at Beckham Field in Columbia. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
