OXFORD, Miss. - Senior Brittany Barnhill struck out seven batters, but four Ole Miss errors led to four unearned runs, as the Rebels fell to No. 2 Florida 8-0 in six innings on Friday.
Florida (28-1, 5-0 SEC) broke on to the scoreboard in the top of the third inning thanks to a fielding error by Ole Miss (10-19, 0-4 SEC) second baseman Natalie Nimmo and a bases-loaded walked from Barnhill that gave the Gators a 1-0 lead. UF added another run in the fourth when Kelsey Horton reached second on a Nimmo dropped pop up and later scored on a throwing error by catcher Kelly Nolan. Second baseman Aja Paculba knocked an RBI single up the middle later in the frame that extended the Gator lead to 3-0.
The Gators added five runs in the sixth highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs from Paculba and shortstop Cheyenne Coyle.
Barnhill took the loss after giving up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings of work. She struck out seven and walked five. Lindsey Perry entered in relief in the sixth and allowed one run on one hit.
Florida starter Hannah Rogers limited the Rebels to just one hit in the complete-game win. She struck out two and did not issue a walk in six innings of work.
The Rebels and the Gators will face off in game two of the series tomorrow at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
