Ole Miss Upends UTEP On Final Day Courtyard Classic

3/6/2011 | Softball

March 6, 2011

DENTON, Texas - Junior Kendall Bruning struck out a career-high 11 batters and Corrine Doornberg knocked in two runs to help Ole Miss down UTEP 6-4 on the final day of the North Texas Courtyard Classic on Sunday.

Bruning allowed just three earned runs on six hits in the complete-game win. In addition to the 11 Ks, she walked just two batters in seven innings of work.

Leftfielder Kayla Black gave the Miners a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run to left center. Ole Miss responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI single to center from third baseman Londen Ladner that cut the UTEP lead in half.

Ole Miss grabbed the lead for good after three-straight two-out, RBI singles from Cali Overbeck, Erinn Jayjohn and Corrine Doornberg that gave the Rebels a 4-2 advantage after three innings. Overbeck tied the game at two with an RBI single up the middle that plated Natalie Nimmo, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame. With the bases-loaded, Jayjohn poked an infield single by Miner second baseman Kayla Oranger to score Brittany Barnhill and give the Rebels the lead for good.

UTEP cut into the Ole Miss lead in the top of the fourth after Bruning hit a batter with the bases loaded. However, she induced designated player Chelsea Troupe to line out to center to preserve the Rebel lead at 4-3.

Doornberg added to the Ole Miss lead in the fifth with an RBI fielder's choice and shortstop Marina Parra earned a bases-loaded walk to put the Rebels up 6-3 after five innings. Doornberg finished the game with a hit and two RBI, while Ladner added three hits in four at-bats. Overbeck and Jayjohn also collected two hits each.

The Miners added a run in the seventh on a Natalie Nimmo fielding error, but Bruning got Kayla Frye to ground out with runners on the corners to end the game.

Ole Miss will open SEC play next weekend as the Rebels travel Columbia, S.C. to face the South Carolina Gamecocks in a three-game set. This year three-game SEC series will be played under the new Friday-Saturday-Sunday format instead of a Saturday doubleheader and a single game Sunday.
