STARKVILLE, Miss. - Kendall Bruning, Lindsey Perry and Brittany Barnhill combined to pitch seven scoreless innings and Londen Ladner knocked in a pair of runs as Ole Miss blanked Mississippi State 6-0 on Friday at the MSU Softball Field.
Bruning started for the Rebels and pitched three scoreless innings before being relieved by Perry to start the fourth. Bruning allowed just two hits and struck out three. Perry picked up the win after allowing just three hits in three innings of work. She struck out one and walked two. Barnhill entered in relief in the seventh and pitch a scoreless final frame.
"This was a complete team effort," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "The pitching staff did a great job, the defensive made some great plays, and we got some timely hits at the plate."
Ole Miss (13-24, 3-9 SEC) loaded the bases in the top of the third after Amanda Hutcheson, Brittany Broome and RT Cantillo all reached on infield singles. With one down in the inning, Ladner singled up the middle and drove in Hutcheson and Broome to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead. A Brittany Barnhill sac fly later in the inning added the third run of the inning for Ole Miss.
MSU (17-18, 5-6 SEC) threatened in the bottom of the second after Courtney Nesbit walked to lead off the frame and was pinch ran for by Jessica Offutt, who moved to second on a ground out with two down in the inning. Heidi Shape then knocked a single into left, but Brittany Broome gunned Offutt out at home to keep the game scoreless.
Catcher Kelly Nolan extended the Ole Miss lead to 4-0 in the fourth with a two-out, RBI single to right that plated Cali Overbeck. Barnhill added another run in the sixth after reaching on a single and later scoring on a throwing error by Bulldog pitcher Kylie Vry. A RT Cantillo RBI single in the seventh provided the Rebels' sixth run of the game.
Ole Miss and Mississippi State will continue the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
