School Records Fall At Pepsi Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Logan Waites and Juliana Smith each broke their own school records in the 5000m and the hammer throw respectively at the 67th Florida Pepsi Relays hosted by the University of Florida April 1-2 in Gainesville, Fla.

In addition, the women's distance medley relay team broke the 23-year old school record with a time of 12:01.03, beating the previous school record of 12:12.58 set in 1988. The sprint medley relay team also broke the school record with a time of 3:28.60, beating the previous school record by over 20 seconds (3:49.75) which was set in 2010.

Neal Tisher, who finished first in the pole vault on Friday, also broke her own school record with a jump of 4.07m (13-04.25) to break the previous record of 13-1.5 she set last year.

The Pepsi Relays is one of the most prestigious track and field events in the country, the Florida Relays attracts more than 3,000 athletes from the high school, collegiate and international ranks.

Waites crushed her previous school record in the 5000m as she ran a 16:51.05 to take eighth overall in the race. Waites, a junior from Hattiesburg, Miss., beat her previous PR and school record by 30 seconds (17:21.07).

On the men's distance side, Martin Kirui finished second in the 3000M steeplechase with a time of 9:01.08 which is one of the top times in the nation this year.

In the field events, Brittany Bozeman recorded a second-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 6.16m (20-02.50) while Smith took third in the hammer throw with a throw of 61.86m (202-11) to break her own school record of 189-10.

The men's 4x200m relay "A" team ran a 1:23.86 to finish fifth. The time ranks fourth in the school record book. The women's 4x400m relay "A" team also found success with a fourth-place finish (3:37.21) which ranks fifth in program history.

In the men's high jump, Ricky Robinson, the school record holder in the event, finished second on Saturday with a jump of 2.20m (7-02.50).

Ole Miss will host the Ole Miss Invitational on Saturday, April 9.
