THIS WEEK FOR OLE MISS:
Ole Miss closedout an eight-game road swing at Memphis on Tuesday night at AutoZone park against the Tigers. The Rebels now return home for Southeastern Conference play with a three-game set against the Georgia Bulldogs over the weekend. Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m., while Saturday is at 2 p.m. on SportSouth. Sunday's game is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
NEXT WEEK FOR THE REBELS:
Ole Miss will go back on the road next Tuesday for a midweek game against Southern Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. The game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start. The Rebels will then come back home for a second straight weekend against the Kentucky Wildcats in a three-game series.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCH-UPS:
FRIDAY, 6:30 P.M.
UGA - Alex Wood, So., LHP
OM - Matt Crouse, Jr., LHP
NOTING CROUSE: Junior left-hander Matt Crouse enters the weekend series with Georgia looking to rebound after his first loss of the season (and only second loss since April 13, 2010). Crouse had taken nine straight decisions before a loss at No. 17 LSU. Despite that outing, the southpaw has turned in stellar numbers this year boosted by an almost scoreless month of March with Crouse on the mound. The junior has struck out 39 and walked only five in 48.1 innings of work. He is holding opponents to a .217 batting average against.
SATURDAY, 2:00 P.M. - SportSouth
UGA - Michael Pallazzone, Jr., RHP
OM - David Goforth, Jr., RHP
NOTING GOFORTH: Goforth enters the weekend series with the Bulldogs coming off his first win in the season at No. 17 LSU. The right-hander worked 6.0 innings and allowed only two runs as he held the Tigers in check during his time on the mound. For the season, the junior's 1-4 record belies his performance on the mound as he holds a 3.32 ERA and opponents are only batting at a .266 clip against Goforth. I his 43.1 innings of work, he has struck out 28 and walked 16 while allowing only 16 earned runs in his seven starts.
SUNDAY, 1:30 P.M.
UGA - Craig Gullickson, Jr., LHP
OM - Austin Wright, Jr., LHP
NOTING WRIGHT: Wright makes his eighth start of the year when he takes the mound on Sunday against the Bulldogs. The left-hander is coming off a tough outing at No. 17 last weekend, but holds a 3.96 ERA on the year and has struck out 36 and walked only 12 in his 38.2 innings of work. The southpaw is also holding opponents to a .280 batting average against in his time on the mound.
A LOOK AT GEORGIA:
The Bulldogs of Georgia enter the weekend series havnig won five straight and hold an overall mark of 16-14 with a 6-3 record in SEC play. Georgia is coming off a pair of midweek wins over Charleston Southern this week and a sweep of Mississippi State last weekend. At the plate, the Bulldogs are hitting .265 as a team and are led by Levi Hyams with a .328 average. Kyle Farmer leads the run production with three home runs and 29 RBI on the season. The Georgia pitching staff holds an overall ERA of 4.24 and have struck out 203 batters while walking 108 on the year. Friday night starter Alex Wood holds a 3-3 mark with a 3.40 ERA. He has struck out 39 and walked 10 in his 39.2 innings of work, while holding hitters to a .241 batting average against in his time on the mound.
OLE MISS VS. GEORGIA:
Ole Miss and Georgia have not faced off as many times as some of the other rivalries in the SEC, but it's one that is easily the most tightly contested. The two teams have played 65 times with the Rebels holding a 33-32 lead in the all-time series. Ole Miss claimed two of three games at Georgia last season. claiming the first two games of the series before falling in the Sunday game .
SOME HAVE HIT STREAKS ON THE LINE:
Several players hold hit streaks heading into the contest with Georgia, including a pair of hitters with streaks of more than 10 games. Matt Smith has hit safely in 14 straight games, while Tanner Mathis currently holds a hit streak of 13 consecutive games. The 14-game hit streak from Smith is the longest of the season, while Mathis' streak is the second longest of the season. Matt Tracy (4) and Taylor Hightower (3) both also have active hit streaks of more than one game coming into the weekend.
OTHERS KEEP REACHING BASE:
While Matt Smith has hit safely in 14 consecutive games, Mathis has reached base in more consecutive games than the senior slugger. Mathis currently holds a streak of 19 straight games reaching base, while Smith's hit streak has allowed him to reach base in 14 straight games. Alex Yarbrough saw his nine game hit streak snapped at No. 17 LSU on Sunday, but drew a walk to keep his streak of reaching base safely at 11 games heading into the Georgia series.
SCHEDULE CHANGE FOR THE REBELS:
Ole Miss has a schedule change for later in the season when the Rebels take to the road to face Arkansas State. Originally slated for a 6:30 p.m. game on May 10, the Rebels will now travel to face Arkansas State on May 4. Game time is still set for a 6:30 p.m. start on the new date.
