Rebels Drop Series Opener To No. 8 Tennessee

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Rebel softball squad dropped the series opener to No. 8 Tennessee, 7-1, on Friday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
The Lady Vols grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI groundouts by Kat Dotson and Lauren Gibson.
Ole Miss threatened in the fifth after Londen Ladner walked and then was pinch ran for by Jayla Hubbard. With two down, Amanda Hutcheson singled to left and moved to second on the throw to give the Rebels runner on second and third. However, designated player Erinn Jayjohn struck out swinging to end the frame.
The Rebels jumped on the scoreboard in the sixth courtesy of a two-out, RBI single up the middle by Jayjohn that scored Amanda Hutcheson from second. Hutcheson had reached on an errant throw by Lady Vol starting pitcher Ellen Renfroe with two outs and nobody on base before stealing second.
Junior Cali Overbeck paced the Rebels at the plate with two hits in four at-bats, while Jayjohn was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Lady Vols added five runs in the top of the seventh aided by three Ole Miss errors. Kendall Bruning started for the Rebels and pitched four innings. She allowed two runs, all earned, on three hits with five strikeouts. Lindsey Perry entered in relief in the top of the fifth and gave up five runs, two earned, on four hits with two Ks. Brittany Barnhill pitched the final frame and issued one walk.
The Rebels and the Lady Vols will continue their three-game series tomorrow at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
