OXFORD, Miss. - Three former and current Rebels are represented at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship which begins Monday at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.
Rising senior Joe David and former Rebels Jonathan Randolph and Phil Caravia are among the elite field which will compete on two different courses - the par 71, 7,016-yard Old Macdonald and the par 70, 6,832-yard Bandon Trails.
Randolph won the qualifier at Bay St. Louis by five strokes, while David shot a 136 to win the qualifier in Nashville, Tenn. Caravia tied for medalist honors at the Madison, Ill., qualifier.
David finished second on the team in stroke average this past year with a 72.31. He posted two top 10 and seven top 20 finishes.
A native of Brandon, Miss., Randolph has been busy this summer since wrapping up his All-American career. He competed in the Sunnehanna Amateur in Pennsylvania and most recently tied for 19th in the Monroe Invitational Championship in Rochester, N.Y.
A four-year letterwinner for the Rebels, Caravia helped lead Ole Miss to the 1999 and 2001 NCAA Championships and also earned Academic All-America honors. He currently lives in Columbia, Ill., and works as a financial advisor.
USGA history will be made at Bandon Dunes this week, as 2011 marks the first time the APL and the WAPL will be conducted simultaneously at the same site. Incoming Rebel Ericka Schneider is in the women's field.
Randolph tees off at 10 a.m. CT time from the 10th tee, David goes off at 3:50 p.m. from the 1st tee, and Caravia starts on No. 1 at 4:10 p.m. All will play the Bandon Trails course in the first round.
After Tuesday's final round of stroke play, the top 64 will advance to Match Play.
Since 1989, the winner of the APL has received an invitation to the Master's Tournament.
