OXFORD, Miss. - The start of the 2011-12 season is still a month and a half away, but four members of the Ole Miss women's golf team will be teeing it up together this week in Georgia. Rising seniors Haley Millsap and Ashley Lance, upcoming junior Haley Sanders and sophomore Kathryn Fowler, will compete in the second annual Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship presented by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) beginning Tuesday in Dahlonega, Ga.
Fifty-eight two-person teams will be competing comprised of top current women's collegiate golfers. Each team will pair players from the same university in a 54-hole stroke play event.
Millsap and Lance will pair up, and Fowler and Sanders will make up the other team for Ole Miss.
The format of the Championship is Day 1 (Aug. 2): Alternate Shot; Day 2 (Aug. 3): Best Ball; and Day 3 (Aug. 4): Aggregate Score of the two players.
Teams are comprised of players from all levels of collegiate golf including 42 Division I, 4 Division II, 6 Division III and one NAIA program.
Millsap, Lance and Sanders competed in the inaugural event last year. Sanders tied for 16th with Lance, and Millsap tied for 25th with former Rebel Jillian Brodd.
All three players said they enjoyed the experience last year and are excited to participate again. "We had so much fun. It was a really interesting experience. It was different," said Lance on playing with Sanders. "We learned to be dependent on each other, because we were playing as a team."
The players stayed with a host family last year and said that made it more enjoyable. "That's the fun part of being in this event, is getting to meet people and staying with a host family. Last year we got together with Haley and Ashley and their host family and grilled out. It was a lot of fun. I am looking forward to playing in it again," Millsap said.
Achasta, by Reynolds is hosting the event in Dahlonega, Ga., one hour north of Atlanta. The par-72 Jack Nicklaus signature golf course is situated in a picturesque valley.
