OXFORD, Miss. - It was a standout year on the track for Ole Miss in 2011, while the Rebels also performed exceptionally in the classroom with nine athletes named to the 2011 Division I All-Academic Track and Field men's and women's teams this week.
Seniors Christopher Bush and Lee Ellis Moore and freshman Dante Oliver earned All-Academic status on the men's side. Seniors Rachel Jenkins, Sofie Persson and Juliana Smith and sophomores Sofia Hellberg-Jonsen, Jazmin Miller and Neal Tisher were All-Academic on the women's side.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Other academic honors received by Ole Miss track and field athletes in 2011 included Moore as SEC Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Americans Moore, Persson and Barnabas Kirui. Moore and Kirui received postgraduate scholarships from the NCAA, while Kirui was honored by the USTFCCCA on the All-Academic Cross Country team. Both the men's and women's cross country teams were recognized as All-Academic Teams by the USTFCCCA. A total of 38 Rebel track and field athletes were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
On the track in 2011, the Ole Miss men finished 11th in the nation for the indoor season and 19th for the outdoor season. The Rebel women were 23rd nationally in indoor. Joe Walker's squad boasted 13 All-America selections in 2010-11 and four individual SEC championships.
