WASHINGTON - Ole Miss (1-1) got off to a great start Saturday afternoon against Maryland (2-0) at the GW Invitational in Washington, D.C., but could not close out the Terrapins late and lost a heartbreaker 3-2 (25-13, 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 11-15) at the Charles E. Smith Center.

"We learned a little bit about ourselves and did some good things along the way," Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin said. "In the fourth set we didn't hold on to the lead, and in the fifth set we had the lead at 9-7 but didn't execute down the stretch. That is something we definitely have to address."

Senior outside hitter Kara Morgan paced the Rebels with a double-double, recording a team-high tying 12 kills and a team-high 17 digs. Junior Marie-Pierre Bakima also had a double-double for Ole Miss with 12 kills and 11 digs. Freshman setter Aubrey Edie passed out 37 assists, and sophomore middle blocker Ty Laporte had 11 kills and a pair of solo blocks.

The Rebels came out flying in the first set, jumping on the Terrapins early and never letting up throughout. Ole Miss stretched its lead to as many as 13 points and won the set by a 25-13 count. Ole Miss led throughout the entirety of the set.

Ole Miss showed its fight in the second set, staving off a nine-point deficit at 17-8 to score 17 of the next 23 points to win the set 25-23. Maryland opened the set by scoring eight of the first 10 points, forcing the Rebels to use their first timeout of the set. Trailing by nine at 17-8, Ole Miss scored six of the next seven points after using its final timeout, and cut the deficit to four at 18-14. Ole Miss finally tied the set at 21 points apiece with a solo block from Nakeyta Clair, and then took the lead on the next point thanks to an attacking error by the Terrapins. Leading 24-23, Ole Miss closed out the set with a kill from Clair.

Maryland took an early lead in the third set and never trailed throughout the entirety of the set. Ole Miss cut its deficit to one point at 16-15, but could not tie the match and Maryland won 25-19.

As opposed to the previous two sets, Ole Miss took an early lead in the fourth set. The Rebels stretched their lead to seven points at 13-6, forcing the Terrapins to use their final timeout of the set. Trailing 21-16, Maryland went on a 6-0 run to take a 22-21 lead, its first of the set, and force Ole Miss to use its second timeout. Maryland continued its run after the break, and won the set 25-22 to force a fifth and deciding set.

After a back-and-forth start to the set that saw the two teams share seven ties and exchange four lead changes, the Rebels went on a 3-0 run to take a 9-7 lead and cause Maryland to call timeout. Maryland came out of the timeout on a 5-0 run to take a 12-9 lead, and went on to take the final set by a score of 15-11.

Ole Miss will close out its Saturday doubleheader against George Washington at 6 p.m. CT. The match will have an added note of interest, as senior middle blocker Kellie Goss will be facing her twin sister, Rachael, who is an outside hitter for the Colonials.
