Rebels to Host South Carolina
10/31/2014 | Volleyball
Oct. 31, 2014 OXFORD, Miss. - Football is not the only game in town this weekend. The Ole Miss volleyball team returns home to host South Carolina Sunday at 1 p.m., at the Gillom Sports Center in a nationally-televised match on the SEC Network.
The Rebels (18-5, 4-5) are looking to snap a two-match losing streak overall and get revenge for an early season loss to the Gamecocks in Columbia. The Rebels had match point in the fourth set in the Sept. 26 meeting, but South Carolina rallied and won the fifth set to take the 3-2 win.
It's Take a Kid to the Game day, and the first 100 fans to bring a kid (8th grade or under) will receive two tickets to the Presbyterian football game on Nov. 8.
NOTING THE REBELS …
• Ole Miss dropped a pair of matches last week, falling to LSU 3-0 at home and then losing to Tennessee 3-0 on the road.
• It's the team's first two-match losing streak since the opening weekend of SEC play. The loss to LSU marked the team's first home loss of the season as they are now 9-1 at the Gillom Sports Center.
• Ole Miss is 16-0 overall and 4-0 in the SEC when hitting above .200, but just 2-5 and 0-5 in league play when hitting under .200.
• Despite hitting well under her average last week, junior middle blocker Nakyeta Clair still ranks second in the SEC in hitting percentage at .411.
REBELS VS. SOUTH CAROLINA …
• Ole Miss looks to snap a two-match losing streak to the Gamecocks, after South Carolina rallied to win in five in their earlier meeting on Sept. 26.
• South Carolina comes into the weekend at 15-7 overall, 5-4 in the SEC. The Gamecocks went 2-1 last week, falling at Coastal Carolina 3-0 before bouncing back with 3-1 victories over Mississippi State and Missouri at home. Before traveling to Oxford, the Gamecocks will play at LSU on Friday.
• The Gamecocks are led by freshman outside hitter Taylr McNeil, who averages 3.44 kills per set.
SOUTH CAROLINA REBELS …
• Junior middle blocker Ty Laporte hails from Irmo, S.C., which is approximately 10 miles from the South Carolina campus. In three matches against her home state team, Laporte boasts 26 kills and 11 blocks and has hit above .300 in all three.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Steven McRoberts …
"This is a team we had match point on in the fourth set at their place, but we let a win slip away. We are looking forward to the match. We are at the halfway point of SEC play. We are 4-5 and eighth in the conference. It is going to be a tough run. We play a lot of teams who are vying for, not only a top place in the conference, but for a place in the NCAA tournament. Hopefully we can get on a run and consider ourselves in that group, too. We've had some great crowds in our last couple of home matches, and hopefully we can get another good one in the gym Sunday."
