MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The No.8 Ole Miss football team wasn't sharp on Sunday afternoon, but did enough to beat Memphis 45-14 at the Liberty Bowl.

Ole Miss (1-0) has won seven straight games, dating back to last season.

UM quarterback Jevan Snead, who came into the season as a darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate, struggled in his season debut, completing 12 or 22 passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Rebels, which came into the season with their highest preseason ranking since 1970, rushed out to a 10-0 in the first quarter on a 27 yard field goal by Joshua Shene and a 1 yard touchdown run by Brandon Bolden.

But after that, the offense bogged down. And it was Snead who struggled most with both interceptions coming in the first half.

Snead's first interception was the most costly, since it gave Memphis possession deep in Ole Miss's territory.

The Tigers scored three plays later on a 2 yard Curtis Steele touchdown run to pull within 10-7 early in the second quarter.

UM's offense got some help from the defense late in the first half, when backup safety Fon Ingram returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown to give UM a 17-7 lead going into halftime.

Both teams were sluggish in at the start of the second half, with Ole Miss finally getting on board after Dexter McCluster's 1 yard run early in the fourth quarter to make it 24-7.

Memphis answered with a touchdown on the ensuing drive to make it 24-14, but Ole Miss finally got things going on offense, as Snead hit Markeith Summers and McCluster for touchdown passes late in the fourth quarter as the Rebels put the game away.

Ole Miss has won five straight games in the series against Memphis, dating back to 2005. The two teams have suspended the series, even though there are still two games remaining on the contract between the two schools.
