MEMPHIS, Tenn. - There is no I in team, and the Ole Miss Volleyball team showed that here Friday night with different players stepping up at different times to lead the Rebels to a 3-2 win against Memphis at the Elma Roane Field House. With the win, Ole Miss improved to 5-0 on the season.

The Tigers held a match point at 14-13, but junior Nakeyta Clair came up big with her 18th kill on the night to tie it at 14. On the next series, Marie-Pierre Bakima came up with the kill to give the Rebels their first match point at 15-14. Memphis couldn't answer, as the ball sailed out on the Tigers' Kate Gibson, giving the Rebels their first five-set win since last year's 3-2 win over LSU in the final regular season match.

"We showed a lot of resilience tonight," head coach Steven McRoberts said. "They had a good crowd and their band was here. There was a lot of energy in the building. At times they had a lot of momentum in the match. We are glad to get the win in a tough environment. This is what we talked about, when we step on the court; we expect to win no matter how hard it is."

Sophomore Melanie Crow put down a career-high 20 kills to lead the Rebels. Clair came up big with 18 kills and hit .467. Several times she stepped up when the team needed a point. Bakima added 10 kills including the one to give the Rebels match point. With the Rebels needing a spark late in the fifth set, Coach McRoberts inserted sophomore Margaret Eggert and she came up big on defense with three digs. Junior Ty Laporte equaled her career-high with eight blocks.

The Rebels took control of the match early, and led 13-9 midway through the first set, as Memphis called timeout. Ole Miss increased its lead to seven, 17-10, as the Tigers called their final timeout. Memphis would only score one more point, as the Rebels closed out the set 25-18 to take the early 1-0 lead.

Memphis rebounded and took control of the second set early. They led it 15-11 when McRoberts used his first timeout. Following the timeout, the Tigers scored two more points to increase their lead to six, 17-11. The Rebels answered with four straight to cut it to two (17-15) as Memphis called their first timeout. Memphis, however, would never relinquish the lead, winning it 25-22 to hand the Rebels their first setback this year.

In the third set, Memphis took the early lead 8-6, but the Rebels would win five of the next seven points to grab their first lead (11-10) in the set. Ole Miss increased its lead to 18-15, as Memphis called timeout. The Tigers pulled to within two, 22-20, but Clair came up big at the end of the set to pace the Rebels to the 25-22 win.

The Tigers, rallied behind the crowd and their pep band, and got off to a 13-9 lead in the fourth set. Too many hitting errors by the Rebels allowed Memphis continued to maintain control and they went on to win 25-18 to square the match.

The fifth set went back and forth with each team holding the lead until the Rebels faced the match point and proceeded to rattle of three straight points.

The Rebels continue play in the Memphis Invitational Saturday with two matches against Arkansas State at 10 a.m. followed by UT-Martin at 4 p.m.
