Rebels Drop Resumed Game With Gamecocks

Box Score

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Rebels got a two-run home run from Allison Brown, but couldn't find the offense that carried the team to a win earlier in the day as Ole Miss (29-20, 6-14 SEC) fell to South Carolina (33-18, 7-13 SEC) by a score of 10-2 Saturday in a resumed game from Friday night.

The game was suspended on Friday night and resumed Saturday afternoon with two men on and no outs in the second inning and South Carolina holding a 1-0 lead. The Rebels surrendered two runs in that resumed inning to fall behind 3-0 and never found a rhythm at the plate to build on the momentum of the earlier game.

"That was certainly a tale of two games," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Smith. "That's the difference between good teams and great teams. Good teams win once in a while. Great teams win on a consistent basis. When we start winning on a consistent basis and show up ready to play a complete game, we'll be a great team. We're a good team right now. The good thing is we have a chance to come out tomorrow and still win a series."

Ole Miss got a fly ball to record the first out of the second inning when the game resumed, but the two runners on base advanced to set up the scores as South Carolina got a sacrifice fly and a single up the middle to take a 3-0 lead on the Rebels after two innings of play.

The Gamecocks continued to add to the lead in the third inning, capitalizing on a Rebel error and a two-run home run to put together a four-run inning and take the lead out to seven runs.

A single run came across the plate in the fourth inning for the Gamecocks to put the Rebels down 8-0 before Allison Brown would hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth. The home run to center field was the eighth of the season for Brown, pulling her into a tie with freshman Alex Schneider for the team-lead this season.

South Carolina then closed things out in the fifth inning, pushing two more runs across the plate to pick up the run-rule win.

The Rebels and Gamecocks will return to the field at 3:30 p.m. Sunday to close out the series in a game televised by the SEC Network. It will be senior day at the Ole Miss Softball Complex with the Rebels honoring a trio of seniors in their final home game of the season.
