Rebels Lead Field at Rain Soaked Old Waverly Invitational

WEST POINT, Miss. -- Senior Blake Morris carded a 2-under 70 in the opening round of the Old Waverly Invitational Monday to help lead Ole Miss to the top of the team leaderboard at the rainy Old Waverly Golf Club. Â
The Waterbury, Connecticut native posted three birdies and an eagle on the par-four No. 1 en route to a 70 in a morning round that was delayed more than an hour due to rain. Morris followed with two more birdies in the second round through 11 holes before play was suspended and finished the day in a tie for fifth at 4-under. The second round resumes tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., with the third round to follow.
Spurred by Morris' hot start, Ole Miss finished the day with a 7-under par 449 and sits atop the leaderboard three shots ahead of UAB and four shots clear of Florida and South Alabama. Host Mississippi State is five shots back in fifth. Â
"I am very proud of our guys for hanging in there through some tough stretches today," said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. It was a long day with the weather delays and pouring rain. As I said before the tournament, we are starting to play our best golf of the year and I'm glad to see it pay off in tournament play. We need to stay aggressive tomorrow and we will be just fine."
Sophomore Bel Wolcott fired a 1-par 71 in the first round with four birdies and was 1-under through 11 holes in the second round before play was suspended. He is currently tied for 11th heading into tomorrow second round. Senior Joe Lewis, who is competing as an individual, is also tied for 11th at 2-under par after carding a 3-under 69 in the opening round.
Freshman Josh Seiple is carded a 1-over 73 in the morning round, but bounced back with three birdies through 11 holes in the afternoon and finished the day in a tie for 17th at 1-under. Sophomore Noah West posted three birdies in the first round en route to an even-par 72 and was even through 11 holes in the afternoon round to finish the day in a tie for 20th. Junior Forrest Gamble is tied for 51st after carding a 114 on day one.
