Rebels Fall In Opener At Texas A&M
5/1/2015 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas --Â The Rebels out-hit the Aggies on the night, but the home team was the one able to convert the hits and opportunities into runs as Ole Miss (30-22, 6-16 SEC) fell at No. 25 Texas A&M (36-17, 10-12 SEC) by a score of 6-1 Friday night in the series opener.
Madi Osias (12-14) suffered the loss for the Rebels, allowing six runs on five hits with four walks through her 3.1 innings of work. Lauren Lindsey closed out the game, allowing two walks and striking out one in 2.2 innings of scoreless work.
Rachel Fox (21-12) picked up the win, allowing one run on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts in the complete-game.
Ole Miss out-hit the Aggies 8-to-5, but Texas A&M capitalized on six walks and used two home runs to grab the win. The Rebels got runners into scoring position in five innings, but were only able to get the one run home.
"We swung the bats well against their top pitcher and one of the better pitchers in the conference," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Smith. "We walked six batters and you can't walk batters, especially in this league. They made us pay for them with the home runs. We ran ourselves out of some innings with some bad base running tonight. I love the aggressiveness, but we have to know the situations and when you're down five runs and trying to come back, every out is important."
A hit batter started the first rally of the game for the Aggies as the leadoff hitter reached to start the second inning. Erin Houthoofd entered to run at first base and took second on a sac bunt as the Rebels got an out on the board as the runner moved into scoring position. A walk put two on before Brittany Clopton hit a line drive just over the glove of a leaping Invergo at second base to get Texas A&M on the board.
A fly out to center put two outs on the board before the Aggies would get a second single up the middle from Cali Lanphear to take the lead out to 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Texas A&M added to the lead in the fourth inning with a pair of two-run home runs that took the lead out to 6-0. With a runner on first following a walk, Erica Russell hit a two-run shot to left field for the first of the inning. The Rebels then put an out on the board before a second walk in the inning put a runner on base. Lanphear then hit the second home run of the inning to give the Aggies a 6-0 lead.
Ole Miss got on the board in the sixth when Bri Payne drove an RBI single through the right side to score Alex Schneider from second. Schneider reached on a single to left center and then took second on a wild pitch to get into scoring position for the Payne hit.
The Rebels trailed 6-1 after the sixth.
Ole Miss held the Aggies off the board, but again was unable to convert with runners in scoring position in the seventh as Texas A&M claimed the series opener.
