Ole Miss Opens 2016-17 Campaign Friday

The Rebels kick off the 2016-17 season on Friday when they welcome Southeastern Louisiana to The Pavilion at Ole Miss at 2:30 PM. The game is the second game of a tripleheader at The Pavilion with the Ole Miss volleyball and men's basketball teams also in action. Season tickets are also available for $50 and can be purchased at the Ole Miss Ticket office or online HERE.

1. Friday's game marks the start of the 43rd season of varsity women's basketball at Ole Miss and the fourth season under the guidance of Matt Insell and staff. Ole Miss has 794-493 all-time record and is seeking its ninth straight season opening win against Southeastern Louisiana.
2. Ole Miss's opener is the second game of a tripleheader at The Pavilion at Ole Miss. The Ole Miss volleyball team will get things started at 11 am followed by the women's game at 2:30 pm and the day will close with men's basketball at 6 pm. Ole Miss will be playing a game at 2:30 for the first time in regular season action in the Insell era.
3. Friday's game marks the collegiate debut for freshmen Shelby Gibson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Bree Glover (Glasgow, Ky.) and Kate Rodgers (Birmingham, Ala.). Additionally graduate transfer Taylor Manuel (St. Louis, Mo.) will also make her debut. Ole Miss will gain the services of junior transfer Chrishae Rowe (Riverside, Calif.) in mid-December.
4.Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana are meeting for the 18th time on Friday. Ole Miss owns a 17-0 series advantage. This will be just the third time the teams have opened a season against each other with the last season-opening meeting coming in 2012-13.
5. Oxford native Erika Sisk enters her senior year just 64 points away from 1,000 career points. She will become the second player to achieve the milestone under head coach Matt Insell and staff and will become the 27th player in program history to top 1,000 career points.
Ole Miss vs. Southeastern Louisiana Notables
-Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana are meeting for the 18th time, with the Rebels owning a 17-0 series advantage. The last meeting between the teams came in 2014-15, a 79-71 overtime win for the Rebels at Tad Smith Coliseum.
-The last time Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana met the Lions were coached by Ole Miss great, Yolanda Moore. Moore played at Ole Miss from 1992-96 and still ranks 10th on Ole Miss all-time scoring list with 1,485 career points and 667 rebounds. She was the head coach at Southeastern Louisiana from 2014-16.
-Southeastern Louisiana will be taking on a very challenging non-conference slate playing the likes of Houston, Baylor, Colorado, Colorado State as well as Florida in their non-conference schedule.
-The Lions have two players on their roster from Mississippi in Tytiana Hall (Crystal Springs) and Taz Stinson (Hattiesburg). Ole Miss has no players on the roster from the state of Louisiana.
A Win Would
-Give Ole Miss its ninth consecutive season-opening win and its 12th consecutive home opening win. Ole Miss would also move to 4-0 in home openers in the Matt Insell era and move to 1-0 in home openers at The Pavilion at Ole Miss.
-Move Ole Miss five wins away from its 800th program victory. The earliest Ole Miss could get all-time win No. 800 would be with a victory over Wisconsin in the opening round of the UNLV Lady Rebel Round Up over Thanksgiving.
Rebels By The Numbers
4- Number of seniors on the Ole Miss roster. Last year Ole Miss was without a senior and this year have a quartet in Bretta Hart, Shequila Joseph, Erika Sisk and Taylor Manuel.
5 - Number of new faces on the Ole Miss roster. This group includes three freshmen in Shelby Gibson, Bree Glover and Kate Rodgers. Additionally, transfers Taylor Manuel and Chrishae Rowe will be new faces. Manuel is immediately eligible to play as a graduate transfer while Rowe will be eligible in mid-December.
6- Number of wins Ole Miss needs to reach 800 program victories. Currently Ole Miss' all-time record is 974-493. Ole Miss' first chance to reach 800 wins will be in the second game of the UNLV Thanksgiving tournament on Nov. 27.
64- Number of points Erika Sisk needs to hit the 1,000-point milestone. The Oxford native has scored over 300 points in each of her two collegiate seasons and seems poised to become Ole Miss' 27th 1,000- point scorer in school history.
83.5 - The percentage of scoring Ole Miss returns from the 2015-16 squad. The Rebels return leading scorer Shandricka Sessom who averaged 15.6 ppg game last year and four of its top five scorers from a year ago.
Scouting Southeastern Louisiana
Southeastern Louisiana enters the 2016-17 season with a new coach in Errol Gauff. Last season the Lions were 4-25 with wins over Florida A&M, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar and Nicholls State. The Lions return second leading scorer Taylin Underwood, who averaged 13.2 ppg last season but have to replace their top two rebounders from a year ago in Nanna Pool who averaged 9.2 rpg and KaeLynn Boyd who grabbed 5.0 rebounds per game. Southeastern Louisiana has seven newcomers on the roster this season including four true freshmen.
About Ole Miss
Ole Miss opens the 2016-17 with lots of optimism. The Rebels return 83.5 percent of their scoring lead by Shandricka Sessom who led Ole Miss with 15.6 points per game a season ago. Additionally top rebounder Bretta Hart is back for her senior campaign. Hart led the Rebels with 5.7 rebounds per game and posted two of the top three rebounding performances in the SEC with 19 rebounds against U-Lafayette and 18 against Western Kentucky. As a team, Ole Miss returns 62.5percent of its rebounding from a year ago. The Rebels will have three true freshmen join the team in Shelby Gibson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Bree Glover (Glasgow, Ky.) and Kate Rodgers (Birmingham, Ala.) while graduate transfer Taylor Manuel (St. Louis, Mo) and transfer Chrishae Rowe (Riverside, Calif.) will also join the team.
