Steven McRoberts Weekly Press Conference
11/7/2016 | Volleyball
Ole Miss volleyball head coach Steven McRoberts met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach McRoberts discussed the Rebels' recent road trip and looked ahead to the weekend home matches against Tennessee and Kentucky.
On LSU and Auburn matches...
"We went on the road and got a win against LSU which we know we let one get away when we played them here. It's always nice to get wins on the road in the SEC, so we are thankful for that. Overall it was a full team effort which has kind of been the story for our team all year. We don't have just one person that dominates. We have a lot of people that contributed to that win. Then we turned around and went to Auburn. They're currently sixth in the conference. Going into that match, we were still only two spots out of sixth place. We felt like if we could get that win and get some more momentum going into these last six matches then possibly we still can make a run and move up. There's a huge number of teams in the conference right now that are bunched up.
But we lost another heartbreaker, disappointing loss. We fought hard in the first set to come back and win a close one, and then basically got blown out in the next two. Turned it around and won a good fourth set. We're up 11-7 in the fifth, we have control and then Auburn goes on a six point run. Flips it 13-11 and beats us 15-13. It's our fourth fifth set loss in a row. Every single one of them 15-13. You look at it from an optimistic standpoint that we're putting ourselves in a position to win, but then you also look it and go we're six points away from being sixth in the conference. That's kind of heartbreaking for this group. They're working hard."
On Week Ahead...
"We're hosting Tennessee and Kentucky this weekend. We have Tennessee at 11 a.m. on Friday morning. It's going to be our kids game. Right now, last I heard we have about 3,000 kids coming. I think when we had our last meeting, a little over 3,000 is the state record for a volleyball match, so we will have an opportunity to break the state record for attendance at a volleyball match. Hopefully we can get a few extra hundred in there [besides the kids] for that match. And then we play a good Kentucky team, who's fighting for a conference championship, on Sunday."
