Raven Saunders the Talk of Track & Field World
6/10/2016 | Athletics, Blog
After Raven Saunders won her third NCAA shot put title and broke a 33-year-old collegiate record yesterday, she was due for some headlines in the track & field world. Her outgoing personality and flashy demeanor in front of the huge NCAA crowd at Oregon's Hayward Field made her that much more of a star.
This morning, she was one of five NCAA champions (alongside Tennessee's Jake Blankenship, Southern Illinois' DeAnna Price and Texas A&M's Lindon Victor and Maggie Malone) to be invited to speak at the annual meeting of the Track and Field Writers Association (TAFWA), where she excellently conversed about her beginnings as a thrower after her high school basketball career as a 5-foot-6 center/power forward didn't work out. She gave credit to her coaches for her training, and spoke excitedly about her opportunity to compete for a spot on Team USA at the upcoming Olympic Trials, which are right back in Eugene, Oregon on July 1-10. Media members in attendance, many of which provide the top coverage of track & field in the world, were amazed by her engaging personality and the amount of power she generates from her below-average stature.
Here is a collection of news articles and videos from around the country about the Rebels' sophomore throwing sensation:
