Ole Miss Athletics Announces Community Connection Week

9/6/2016 | Student-Athlete Development

Sept. 6, 2016

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Athletic Department, in partnership with the University of Mississippi and the L-O-U community have announced several community events set to take place Monday through Saturday (Sept. 5-10).

Community Connection week is designed to serve as a connecting point for the campus community as well as the greater Oxford-Lafayette community and was born out of the idea that we all need to connect and celebrate the community that we are fortunate to call home.

Highlights from the week's programming include a community service opportunity with More Than a Meal, which will feature members of the Ole Miss softball team and athletic department, as well as a Are You Ready Dialogue centered on discussing community relations.

In keeping with the theme of community connection, the Ole Miss Athletics department along with ASB will sponsor a Community Tailgate on Thursday from 6-7 at the Pavilion at Ole Miss Plaza. There will be free food and drink to go along with games as we celebrate each other, our differences and those things that connect us.

On Friday, there will be a Community Connection Week Awards Reception in the Pavilion Club at The Pavilion at Ole Miss beginning at 4 p.m. where the Nathaniel Northington Trailblazer in Athletics Award will be presented to Rose Flenorl, Manager, Global Citizenship, FedEx Corporation.

"Rose has always been a staple in the Ole Miss Family through her work in a variety of capacities," said assistant athletics director for student-athlete development, Jennifer Saxon. "Her willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty as an undergraduate student laid a foundation for a continued inclusive Ole Miss community. We are grateful for her service to our community as we continue to promote an atmosphere of inclusivity."

Rose Jackson Flenorl leads a team of professionals committed to representing the heart of the FedEx Corporation.

Her team focuses on executing strategic programs and maintaining relationships with national and international non-profit organizations. Rose has more than 30 years of experience in marketing, communications and corporate social responsibility starting her career at IBM. She has worked in Corporate Communications for FedEx for 15 years. An active participant in many philanthropic organizations, she represents FedEx on the Conference Board Contributions Council and serves on the board of directors of the National Civil Rights Museum.

A graduate of the University of Mississippi, she was the first black female named to the student Hall of Fame and was chosen by Glamour Magazine as one of the top 10 college women in the United States. Rose continues to make an impact as a leader at her alma mater; she was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 1998 and in 2008 served as president of the national Alumni Association. She is a charter member of the Ole Miss Women's Council and serves as board chair of the University of Mississippi Foundation. Flenoral served two terms as a member of the Ole Miss Athletics Committee and is currently a member of the Ole Miss Athletics Diversity Committee.
