Thornberry in Contention at Marquette Intercollegiate

Milwaukee, Wis.-The Ole Miss men's golf team battled windy conditions in Milwaukee, Wisconsin today, as they began their second tournament of the season, the Marquette Intercollegiate, at Erin Hills Golf Course.
The windy conditions did the Ole Miss team no favor as they finished day one in 13th place after posting a 20-over (308) score. South Florida is currently in the lead as they are even with a 288.
Junior Braden Thornberry led the Rebels in the opening round taking the momentum he had from last week's victory at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate into today's play. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native remained even until the turn, eventually finishing 1-under par (71) and in a six-way tie for fourth on the leaderboard.
Thornberry began his play with back-to-back bogeys, but followed with back-to-back pars to get on an even pace for the next five holes. On the back 9, he used three birdies to shoot under par on the side and wrap-up another under-par round.
In his first round of the season, sophomore Brody Blackmon checked in behind Thornberry after posting 2-over par (74), a result of 11 pars and two birdies. Blackmon is competing as an individual and currently stands in a six-way tie for 22nd on the leaderboard.
Juniors Josh Seiple (78) and Beau Briggs (80) struggled early as they both posted three bogeys before the turn. Seiple was able to respond halfway through the back 9 when finding his first eagle of the season on a par-5, 594-yard 14th. After competing as an individual last week, freshman Cecil Wegener made his debut in the Rebel lineup and posted a 79.
Ole Miss will return to Erin Hills for Round 2 tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. CT.
