Rebel Men Finish 18th, Women 25th at NCAA Championships
11/18/2017 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After another highly successful season, Ole Miss men's and women's cross country ended the season with two top-25 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday morning, with the Rebel men finishing 18th in the 10K and the women 25th in the 6K.
The Rebels were one of 12 programs nationally (and one of two in the SEC) to place both their men's and women's programs in the top-25, with the others being cross country mainstays Arkansas, Boise State, BYU, Colorado, Iowa State, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, Oregon, Stanford and Washington. Ole Miss entered as one of just 17 schools nationwide that qualified both a men's and women's squad.
The men's team has now earned back to back top-20 spots at the NCAA meet (after finishing on the podium last season in fourth), while the women's team ran in only their second national meet in program history and earned their second-straight top-25 finish.
Individually, senior Sean Tobin ended his excellent Rebel career with the race of his life, earning his first-career cross country All-American honors in 12th place at a career-best 10K time of 29:39.4 - besting his previous PR of 30:15.7 that he ran just last week at the NCAA South Regional. The Ireland native was hovering around 50th place at the 4K mark before putting on an extraordinary kick over the final 6K, passing 38 runners in that stretch for the All-American finish.
Tobin's race today was the third-highest finish of any cross country runner in Ole Miss history, which adds to an already incredible NCAA resume. He also holds the seventh and ninth highest NCAA finishes in Rebel history after finishing 62nd in 2016 and 68th in 2015.
Tobin was followed by senior Derek Gutierrez (96th, 30:39.9), freshman Waleed Suliman (100th, 30:42.9), freshman Parker Scott (168th, 31:18.0) and senior Ryan Manahan (178th, 31:24.2). Ole Miss loses experienced seniors in Tobin, Gutierrez and Manahan, but today proved valuable NCAA experience for the stellar freshmen Suliman and Scott - who have both had very strong initial campaigns at Ole Miss.
"Our men got out well and battled hard," said associate head coach for cross country Ryan Vanhoy. "That's a huge result for Sean and something that he's been working toward for a long time, so it's great to see him reach that goal of finishing as a top-20 individual at the NCAA meet. The men came into the meet ranked 25th, so it was good to surpass that finish by a good margin, which was our primary goal."
The women's team was led by freshman Clio Ozanne-Jaques, who concluded a very strong freshman season in 109th at 20:46.6. Senior Shelby Brown wasn't far behind in 113th at 20:49.5, and was followed by fellow senior Hannah Christen (142nd, 21:02.1), senior Emily Bean (164th, 21:12.3) and junior Anna Braswell (197th, 21:33.7).
Now with cross country in the rearview mirror, the Rebel distance squad turns its attention to the indoor track & field season that is set to begin in Janurary.
"All things considered we had a successful season with both teams and will now turn our attention towards the track," Vanhoy concluded.
