4/19/2017 | Men's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After going 2-0 in singles last weekend to lead the Rebels to two wins including No. 24 Kentucky, Ole Miss men's tennis junior Gustav Hansson has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.
This marks the first time for Hansson to be named player of the week and the second weekly honor of his career. He was named freshman of the week in 2015.
Hansson posted two ranked wins last weekend, including No. 19 William Bushamuka, to help the Rebels rally for a 4-2 win against Kentucky after dropping the doubles point. It marked the first time this year for the Rebels to come back and win after dropping the doubles point.
With three of the four remaining matches in third sets, Hansson's win over Bushamuka gave the Rebels a 2-1 lead. It marked the Rebels seventh straight victory on the season and seventh in the last eight meetings against Kentucky.
On Friday, Hansson's win against No. 58 ranked Danny Valent helped the Rebels win their fifth straight against Vanderbilt.
Hansson improved to 20-11 overall, 11-7 at No. 1 singles and 6-6 in the SEC. Has won six straight in singles and now has nine ranked wins this year.
The Rebels earned the No. 6 seed in the SEC Championship and will face the No. 11 seed, Auburn, April 27 at 8 a.m. CT in Knoxville, Tennessee.
