Rains Cancels Third Round of Magnolia Invitational
WEST POINT, Miss. – Heavy rain forced the cancellation of the final round at the Magnolia Invitational on Tuesday. The second-round results from Old Waverly became final keeping Ole Miss tied for fourth as a team.
The Rebels were poised for the final push today, especially after the third rounds from Knoxville and Denver were both historic scoring earlier this season. Consistent play was going to be the key to the final round for Ole Miss, as birdies weren't the issue on the first two days. The Rebels led the tournament in birdies with 37, and gained 22 strokes on the par 5s.
"We were disappointed that we weren't able to play the final round due to weather but that is something that is out of our control," said head coach Kory Henkes. "It shows that every round is important and you have to do your best each time you tee it up."
"The Magnolia Invitational is always a great event that we enjoy hosting. The team has a lot of positives to take away from this tournament and we can take a lot of positive energy into Louisville this weekend."
Conner Beth Ball finished in the top 10, her sixth such finish in her young career. Ball tied for the team lead the team in birdies with nine and spent the entire first two rounds in the top 10 individually.
"It's always good to get another top 10 finish, but I really wish we were all able to play today," Ball said. "Having rain and weather cancel out rounds of a tournament is never fun because it always leaves you feeling you could have done more, but all in all I think the team is in a good position to improve going into Louisville this weekend."
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay finished tied for 13th, her career best finish in her third collegiate event, after a career best 18-hole score on day two shooting a 1-under 71.
Julia Johnson finished tied for 25th and led the team in pars with 25, including 14 straight on day two.
The Rebels return to the course this Saturday for the Cardinal Cup (Oct. 20-21) in Louisville.
