Rebels begin fourth tournament of October
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Ole Miss women's golf team will close out their 2018 fall season Oct. 28-29 as the Rebels head to Texas for the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos.
The two-day event will take place at the brand new Kissing Tree Golf Club, which will be playing 6,185 yards and par 72.
The 15-team tournament field consists of the host team Texas State, Florida State, Houston, Memphis, Miami, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Southern Miss, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UNLV and Ole Miss.
Head coach Kory Henkes is sending five Rebels to compete at the final fall event, including Julia Johnson, Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, Pi-Lillebi Hermansson, Kie Purdom and Conner Beth Ball.
"Coach Henkes and I would love to see a continued improvement from this week's practice," assistant coach Drew Belt said. "We have been emphasizing a couple things that have plagued us this fall as a team, putting and mental discipline to make correct decisions. The girls are anxious to get to San Marcos and go to work."
Johnson, a sophomore from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, is coming off a top-10 finish in Louisville, her second of the fall. The sophomore leads the team in stroke average at 72.9.
Ball will also be searching for her third top-10 finish of the season, as the sophomore heads to Texas with a 74.7 stroke average. Freshman Ellen Huchinson-Kay is second on the team in stroke average (74.0) and is coming off a 25th place finish at the Cardinal Cup in which she drained a career-high 10 birdies.
Hermannson and Purdom round out the squad for the Rebels with both participating in their fourth tournament of the season.
This will mark just the fifth time in program history that the Rebels have participated in a regular season tournament in Texas and the first time since 2014 when Ole Miss last played in the Jim West Challenge.
The Rebels best finish in the state of Texas came in a fifth place showing at the Jeannine McHaney Invitational held in Lubbock to open the 2006 season.
First round gets underway Sunday morning with an 8:15 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with UNLV and Texas Tech.
