No. 12 Ole Miss competes Saturday and Sunday

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 12 ranked Ole Miss rifle squad hosts a pair of Great America Rifle Conference foes, No. 1 Kentucky on Saturday and No. 8 North Carolina State on Sunday at the Ole Miss Rifle Range, starting at 8 a.m. CT both days.
 
Kentucky is the reigning NCAA Rifle Champion and NC State has won its first two matches of the season. The Rebels will also be the only Ole Miss team competing at home this weekend.
 
Start times…
Smallbore: 8:00 a.m. CT.
Air Rifle: 10:45 a.m. CT (approximate).
 
Location, location, location…
The Ole Miss Rifle Range is located next to the Oxford Conference Center. The Conference Center is at 100 Ed Perry Boulevard, just off the Sisk Avenue exit on Highway 7.

On Saturday, the first 35 fans will receive an Ole Miss rifle tumbler and will receive 50 bonus Rebel Rewards Points by staying until the start of air rifle. On Sunday, the first 35 fans will be given an Ole Miss rifle t-shirt.

Scouting the Opponents…
Both Kentucky and NC State are coming off season-best scores and enter the match 2-0. The Wildcats scored 4718 in their last match on Oct. 14, while NC State notched 4664 on Oct. 13. Kentucky has eight returners from its national championship squad. NC State will be competing in Memphis on Saturday, giving neither team an advantage in that regard.
 
Last meetings…
Ole Miss posted an impressive 4664 in a defeat of then-No. 2 Kentucky last Nov. in Lexington. The Wildcats racked up a score of 4689 en route to an eventual national title in March. Harley Gardner fired a 584 in smallbore to lead the Rebels, while Abby Buesseler and Emily Cock both tallied 592 points to power air rifle.
 
Rebel rifle downed NC State, 4661-4650 on Sept. 24, 2017 in last season's opening match. Gardner was Ole Miss' top shooter in smallbore (581) and air rifle (591).

"We are looking forward to hosting Kentucky and North Carolina State this weekend. I always like shooting against top-ranked teams. Shooting with the best pushes us to do better and provides a great opportunity to learn."
 
On Kentucky…
"Kentucky is the current NCAA National Champion. In their most recent match they posted the highest score of any team this season. Kentucky is a strong team with a lot of depth." 
 
On NC State…
"NC State is ranked ahead of us, but we are pretty evenly matched. I think it will be a very close contest."
 
On competing back-to-back days…
"I like having back-to-back matches. I feel like it is good for us to immediately return to competition and work on what we learned the day before."
 
Numbers and Nuggets…
  • A total of seven different Rebels recorded season bests in smallbore and air rifle last match against Navy (Oct. 21). Eight shooters improved aggregate totals as well.
  • The match on Sunday with NC State will be the fourth home match of the season. Ole Miss' next and final home meeting of 2018-19 will be Sat., Feb. 2 against Nebraska. There will be four road matches (Nov. 17, Jan. 12, Jan. 13, Jan. 19) preceding the home finale.  
  • Senior Harley Gardner sits tied for third in the Ole Miss record book with a 586 in smallbore.
  • Redshirt freshman Jillian Zakrzeski shares fourth place in air rifle school history with a 595, set on Oct. 13 against Memphis/Army. She is also tied for the highest kneeling score by an Ole Miss shooter in the last four seasons with a 196, posted on Oct. 21 against Navy.
  • Sophomore Sophia Cuozzo and senior Randi Loudin have recorded a perfect 200 in prone this season. Loudin owns seven perfect prone marks for smallbore in NCAA competition for her career.
  • Rebel rifles' all-time best aggregate score sits at 4687, set Jan. 19, 2018 against Alaska.
  • The top smallbore mark in program history is 2325 (set in 2005) and 2365 for air rifle (set in 2012).
 
Last match highlights vs. Navy…
  • The Rebels posted 22 season-high scores and seven career bests, but were outshot by No. 7 Navy, 4668-4656 last Sunday at the Ole Miss Rifle Range. The Rebels posted their second-highest aggregate score and best air rifle mark (2357) of the season.
  • Freshman Erin Walsh fired a career-best 578 to finish third in smallbore behind Navy's Michael Zanti (581) and Kestrel Kuhne (580). Sophomore Sophia Cuozzo tallied her best-ever competitive smallbore score with a 577. Ole Miss secured 2299 points in the discipline.
  • Navy and Ole Miss battled to a stalemate in air rifle, 2357-2357. It was Ole Miss' highest mark so far for 2018-19. Sophomore Kamilla Kisch finished tied for second with a season-best 592 points. Kuhne of Navy tallied the highest score with a 593. Senior Randi Loudin (589), Walsh (584), and redshirt freshman Megan Taylor (581) had career bests in air rifle.
