NCAA South Regional Will Take Place Nov. 9 in Tallahassee
NEW ORLEANS – After a historic turn of events at the SEC Championships, the Ole Miss men's cross country team moved up to No. 17 in the Week Six USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, while the Rebel women also jumped up to No. 23.
The Rebel men helped secure the first SEC title in Ole Miss track and cross country history last Friday, snapping Arkansas' eight-year winning streak while also becoming the first school not named Arkansas or Alabama to win the SEC men's title since 1990 (Tennessee). It's a four-spot improvement for Ole Miss, who used a powerful team performance to win the SEC title last week thanks to all five Rebel scorers finishing within the top-11 spots: sophomore Waleed Suliman (fourth, 22:59.4, First-Team All-SEC), freshman Cade Bethmann (sixth, 23:05.0, First-Team All-SEC, SEC All-Freshman), freshman Mario Garcia Romo (seventh, 23:07.0, First-Team All-SEC, SEC All-Freshman), junior Farah Abdulkarim (eighth, 23:08.7, Second-Team All-SEC) and senior Mark Robertson (11th, 23:13.1, Second-Team All-SEC).
This marks the 24th-straight appearance for the Ole Miss men, their 30th in the last 35 polls overall dating back to 2014. Additionally, the Rebel men have been at least receiving votes in 33 of the last 35 national coaches polls.
The Rebel women also had a very successful trip to Auburn for the SEC Championships, finishing third in the team standings for the third-straight season – the best streak in school history after never finishing in the top-three prior to 2016. Sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques became just the seventh Rebel to ever earn All-SEC honors, finishing 12th overall to lead Ole Miss for Second-Team distinction at a PR 6K time of 19:48.2. Other Rebel scorers included junior Maddie McHugh (21st, 20:05.7), sophomore Maddie King (24th, 20:09.9), freshman Lisa Vogelgesang (25th, 20:13.0, SEC All-Freshman) and freshman Ylvi Traxler (34th, 20:26.7).
Combined, this is the 16th occasion in program history where both the Rebel men and women have been ranked simultaneously. Ole Miss is one of just eight schools nationally to have both its men's and women's programs finish within the top-25 at the NCAA Championships in each of the last two seasons (joining Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Michigan State, NC State, Oregon and Stanford).
Ole Miss will rest this week before heading to Florida State for the NCAA South Regional on Nov. 9.
