Football Comes Up Short at Texas A&M

11/10/2018 | Football

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – It was a record-breaking afternoon for A.J. Brown, who became the new all-time career leader in receiving yards at Ole Miss, but the special day came in a 38-24 defeat at the hands of Texas A&M.

Brown finished with six receptions for 127 yards, becoming the all-time career receiving yards leader, while also eclipsing 1,000 yards receiving for the second straight season. DaMarkus Lodge had a tremendous day through the air as well, tallying 122 yards and a touchdown on six catches. Quarterback Jordan Ta'amu threw for 373 yards on 22-of-35 with one touchdown.

The Ole Miss defense came through with a touchdown on a 96-yard Zedrick Woods scoop-and-score, the longest fumble return by a Rebel in more than a century, to open the second half, but it wasn't enough in front of 102,618 at Kyle Field.

The Ole Miss offense took a major hit early as Scottie Phillips went down with an ankle injury on the Rebels' second series and did not return.

Three straight defensive stops opened the game before Texas A&M took the lead on its second drive. The Aggies used three key connections between Kellen Mond and Camron Buckley before Mond took it himself for the game's opening touchdown.

The Rebels answered quickly, though, as Ta'amu hit Octavious Cooley for 9- and 23-yard completions before finding Lodge on a 44-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game at seven.

The Ole Miss defense came through with a 3-and-out on the ensuing drive, and the Rebel offense made the most of it. After a couple of nice runs by Isaiah Woullard, Ta'amu linked up with Brown for a 39-yard gain. He then found Lodge for a 12-yarder before taking it himself from 1 yard out for his fifth rushing touchdown of the season.

After another defensive stop, the Rebels appeared en route to another score after Lodge made a spectacular catch in single coverage for a 51-yard gain. However, Ta'amu fumbled two plays later to send the ball back to the Aggies. The home team tied it up on a 21-yard reception by Buckley to make it 14-all at the half.

Right out of the gates in the second half, the Rebel defense set the tone. Two big Trayveon Williams runs had the Aggies inside the 5-yard line, where Willie Hibbler knocked the ball out of Mond's grasp. Woods scooped it up and took it 96 yards back for a touchdown, the second-longest fumble return in program history and the longest since 1914.

The Rebel defense came up with another turnover as Ken Webster intercepted Mond on the following drive. However, Ole Miss couldn't make anything of it. After a 3-and-out, Texas A&M marched downfield and tied it up on a 10-yard strike by Mond to Quartney Davis.

On the following drive, Ta'amu connected with Brown on a 14-yard gain, and the reception made the junior out of Starkville, Mississippi, the new all-time career receiving yards leader in Ole Miss history.

Unfortunately, Dawson Knox was flagged for targeting while making a block on the play, stalling the Rebel drive. The Aggies took the lead shortly thereafter on a 46-yard field goal by Seth Small.

The two offenses traded 3-and-outs before the Rebels made a drive. Ta'amu hit Cooley for a 34-yard gain to open the drive, giving the tight end a career-high three receptions. He then connected with freshman Elijah Moore on a 19-yard gain. However, Luke Logan's 22-yard field goal attempt missed wide right, and the score remained 24-21 in favor of the Aggies.

Texas A&M made the most of the miss, driving 80 yards in six plays and claiming a 31-21 lead on a Mond-Davis touchdown connection.

The Rebels came back with a field goal drive. On the series, Ta'amu hit Brown for a 37-yard gain to give the Rebels' top receiver 1,000 yards for the second straight season. Logan punctuated the drive by hitting from 24-yards out to make it a 31-24 game.

However, Texas A&M quickly ended the comeback bid. The Aggies recovered the onside kick, and Williams took the first play 46 yards for a touchdown to ice the A&M win.

Ole Miss is back on the road next week for a 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff Saturday at Vanderbilt on SEC Network.
