Rebel Women Earn At-Large Bid to NCAA Cross Country Championships

Ole Miss Sending Both Men’s and Women’s Teams for Third-Straight Year
INDIANAPOLIS – For the third consecutive season, both the Ole Miss men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Championships, held this year at the University of Wisconsin.
The No. 17 Rebel men already knew their fate after securing an automatic bid via a dominant South Region championship yesterday morning, but the No. 23 Rebel women had to wait for the NCAA's selection show this afternoon to find it if it had secured one of the 13 coveted at-large slots.
Ole Miss is now one of just nine schools in the nation to send both its men's and women's programs to the national meet in each of the last three seasons – joining Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, Iowa State, NC State, Oklahoma State, Oregon and Stanford. Additionally, Ole Miss is now one of just seven programs in the NCAA with a chance to place both its teams within the top-25 for a third straight season alongside Arkansas, BYU, Colorado, NC State, Oregon and Stanford.
"It's a great feeling to be returning to the NCAA Championship with both teams for the third year in a row," said associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy, the SEC's Men's Coach of the Year. "The athletes have invested a lot into this season, so it's exciting to be able to finish it together in Madison next weekend."
To get to this point, teams needed to either finish within the top-two at one of nine NCAA Regional meets that were run yesterday throughout the United States, or earn one of the 13 at-large bids handed out today. From there, the next four individual finishers from each region not attached to an already qualified team also earned trips to the national meet as an individual runner.
The Ole Miss men are in the midst of a season for the ages, which has seen the capture of the first SEC Championship in Rebel track or cross country history, as well as a dominant 47-point win at the South Regional – the third regional title by the Rebel men in five years after winning in 2014 and 2016.
Ole Miss has accomplished all this without the services of 2017 All-Region runner Parker Scott, who has missed the entire cross country season due to an injury. The Rebel men have a deep and young talent pool, though, and have benefited greatly from the addition of junior Farah Abdulkarim.
Abdulkarim was the catalyst for the men's win at the SEC Championships, laying a charge down in the last kilometer that helped push five Rebel men into the top-11. Abdulkarim was also the leader yesterday, finishing third overall for All-Region honors – just the fourth top-three regional finish in Ole Miss history.
Other Rebel men finishing All-Region yesterday were sophomore Waleed Suliman (sixth), senior Mark Robertson (eighth), freshman Mario Garcia Romo (13th), SEC Freshman of the Year Cade Bethmann (15th) and sophomore Ben Savino (20th).
The No. 23 Rebel women ran into a highly competitive South Regional yesterday, taking third overall behind Florida State and No. 21 Florida. Like the men, the Ole Miss women have also been without the services of All-Region runner Anna Braswell, but that hasn't stopped a young Rebel squad from continuing a historic run over the last few years.
After finishing third at the SEC Championships for the third-straight year (and after not finishing in the top-three ever prior to 2016), Ole Miss placed four All-Region runners yesterday – marking the third-straight year of at least four All-Region honorees.
Leading the way was sophomore Clio Ozanne-Jaques, who recorded the highest regional finish in Ole Miss women's history in fifth place yesterday – her second All-Region honor in as many tries. Other Rebel women earning All-Region yesterday included freshman Lisa Vogelgesang (14th), sophomore Maddie King (20th) and freshman Ylvi Traxler (25th).
Competition will begin next Saturday (Nov. 17) with the women's championship 6K race at 10:45 a.m. CT, followed by the men's championship 10K at 11:45 a.m. CT.
