Volleyball Suffers Sweep at South Carolina
11/16/2018 | Volleyball
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Junior Emily Stroup turned in her league-leading 14thdouble-double, but it wasn't enough as Ole Miss Volleyball suffered the sweep in South Carolina, falling 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.
Ole Miss slips to 13-17 and 3-13 in SEC play, while South Carolina improves to 19-6, 10-5.
Stroup turned in a team-high 13 kills to accompany 12 digs, while sophomore setter Lauren Bars also registered her third double-double of the year, tallying 30 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Aubrey Sultemeier posted five blocks to lead the net defense.
The opening stanza was very much a back-and-forth affair early, as the Rebels held a slight advantage after a four-point rally put them up 8-5. The Gamecocks responed by using their own series of runs, stringing together two separate 3-0 rallies and a 4-0 run to take a 17-14 lead and shift the momentum.
Ole Miss stayed within earshot, coming within one on four separate occasions from the 18-19 mark onward, but South Carolina sealed the set by securing the final four points of the set to take a 25-20 victory.
The Gamecocks continued to control the contest, building a lead of as many as four points in the second set. The Rebels cut the lead to two as late as 20-18, but were unable to mount a comeback, dropping the second frame by an identical score.
The hot swinging stayed for South Carolina, who used a 5-0 run, followed by another four straight points to build an 11-6 lead over the Rebels. Ole Miss responded with their own rally, picking up kills from freshman Aubrey Sultemeier and senior Caitlin Wernentin to guide a 3-0 run and come within one at 14-13.
The Rebels continued to chip away, using another three-point sequence- this time courtesy of two Gamecock errors and a rejection from junior Nayo Warnell at the net- to narrow the gap to 19-18.
Ole Miss then secured four consecutive points to even the score and eventually take the lead on an extensive and intense volley which found Mulkey on the firing end of a big-time kill to put the Rebels up 21-20.
Ole Miss continued to ride the comeback, adding a point on a block from Mulkey and Sultemeier to go up 23-21. South Carolina spoiled the excitement, winning the final four points of the contest to pull off the sweep.
